Foundation Stage

Nursery

In the Nursery we work within the Early Learning Goals. Children build on their existing skills by encountering new experiences which deepen their understanding.

Gemma, a representative of Middlesbrough Countryside links, worked with Y4 children during a six week programme which linked art and crafts to the countryside.

One technique taught was felt-making. Strands of wool were pulled from a hank of uncarded wool. A variety of colours were chosen and positioned in a tray in layers to build up a 3 dimensional picture. The wool was soaked and pressed for 20 minutes, then detergent was added to the picture and which was again smoothed and flattened for a further 40 minutes until all the layers were bonded. The picture was then rinsed in clean wateer and left to dry.

Each child designed a picture with a countryside theme and made that picture. All of the children's felt pictures have been stitched together to make a wall hanging for the Lingfield Countryside Park in Coulby Newham.

Gemma also taught the technique of roller printing. Each etched a design into the surface of a polysyrene tile, then loaded a roller with printing ink and transferred the ink to the tile. The inked tile was placed surface down onto coloured paper. A clean, dry roller was then used to roll over the back of the tile transferring the design onto the coloured paper.
