Welcome to Adelaide School

Our School

This is the result of the school’s success in creating a welcoming, calm and purposeful atmosphere in which pupils are valued as individuals and treated with dignity and respect. Staff constantly look for ways to improve. A culture of success, where the achievements of all pupils are celebrated, permeates the ethos of the school.

Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own decisions and are able to understand the consequences of these; this reflects the school motto, ‘helping young people to help themselves’. The quality of teaching and learning is good overall and some lessons, where the planning is extremely well considered, are outstanding.

CURRICULUM

Adelaide School offers a wide range of experiences encompassing all aspects of education. Our aim is to provide a curriculum which is broad balanced and relevant. Each pupil has the opportunity to benefit from the National Curriculum which is delivered on an individual basis. Opportunities for group work are taken when this has positive benefits for all those involved. In this way emphasis is given to individual potential, teamwork skills and equality of opportunity. It is the tradition of the school to have high expectations of our pupils and to set them challenging targets not only in academic work, but also within sport, leisure and social situations. We would not expect to use the exceptional arrangements which are available through sections 17-19 of the Education reform Act 1988 and all of our pupils are involved in all aspects of the National Curriculum.

The school operates A Pupil’s Charter, a copy of which is available to all pupils and their parents at interview. This in itself is an important document since it has a major impact on the attitude of pupils to the school and for that reason is replicated in full within this prospectus. However, in addition to this the school has more general aims which are intended to shape the curriculum at all levels.

Our aims are intended to help our pupils;-

  • To receive their entitlement to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum including the National Curriculum and Religious Education.
  • To maximise their potential to acquire knowledge, master skills and practical abilities with the motivation and confidence to use them.
  • To place particular emphasis on developing their capacities to enquire, to think, to gain concepts and to understand.
  • To develop qualities of mind, body, spirit feeling and imagination.
  • To appreciate human achievements in Art, Technology, Physical Education and Science
  • To acquire understanding of the social, economic and political order and a reasoned set of attitudes, values and belief.
  • To gain insight into their own behaviour, developing a positive self image and thereby relating positively with others.
  • To develop coping strategies in order to enhance their lives at home, at work, at leisure and in their relationships with others.
  • To engender the capacity to live as independent self-motivated adults and develop their ability to function as contributing members of society.
