Our Vision and Values at Alphington Combined School

We have spent some time discussing the aims of our school and we arrived at four aims which covered the person, relationships, society and the environment.

  • We value ourselves as unique human beings who will grow spiritually, morally, intellectually and physically.
  • We value others as individuals and recognise their uniqueness. We value positive relationships as fundamental to our own well-being and the good of the community.
  • We wish to be part of a global society where people care for others. We value families as sources of love and support for all their members and within this we see our school as an extended family.
  • We value and care for the environment, both natural and shaped by humanity and see it as the basis of life and a source of wonder and inspiration.

So that we can meet these aims, as a school we provide the following:

  • A safe learning environment where children are willing to ‘have a go’.
  • Time for structured reflection over the learning the children have accomplished and constructive feedback to ensure the children move forwards in their learning.
  • A Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum.
  • No toleration of bullying or disruptive behaviour.
  • Trips and residential experiences to broaden the children’s horizons and develop relationships.
  • Assemblies – taken by the children and by teachers; on a Monday we have a Celebration Assembly where eight or nine children across the school are celebrated and given a Certificate. Parents/grandparents of these children are invited to attend this celebration. Some of our Friday assemblies are Family Assemblies where children join their ‘family’ class and the Year 7 children take the assembly. Other Friday assemblies are taken by each class in turn and focus on a topical issue or celebrate the work that the class has been experiencing.
  • An opportunity for children to act as role models.
  • Education outside the school environment.
  • The skills to resolve disputes peacefully and model positive relationships.
  • A School’s Council where children have a voice that is heard.
  • Time to give to charities locally and nationally – each year we have a main charity that we support and throughout the year children also raise money for other charities.
  • Time for grandparents to visit and home visits for new reception children.
  • Care over our communication with parents – be that letters, by telephone, face to face or notes in home/school contact books.
  • The opportunity to give something back to our local community eg Carol Singing at local residential homes.
  • A nature trail gives the opportunity for children to observe, listen and wonder at the natural environment.
  • We have a programme of work called Learning through Landscapes.
  • We have an Eco School ’s Award – we turn off lights, compost, recycle and preserve our wildlife areas. We also have a Virtual Bus – a walking bus with an adult at the front acting as a driver and an adult at the rear acting as a conductor which enables children to walk to school safely.
