Mrs. E. Hamilton, HeadteacherMessage from the Headteacher

Over the past 2 years, 4 million pounds have been spent on refurbishment and several fantastic new buildings. In September 2004 we became the first Maths and Computing College in the Dover and Deal area. We now receive extra government money to boost achievement levels in Maths and Computing and our new specialist status will help us to prepare our students for success in the 21st century.

We work in partnership with parents who have the opportunity to discuss with me at "Open Door" anything concerning their child's progress or the school in general.

We maintain strong links with our local feeder schools, and I see Archers Court as a real community, where each student matters and is valued as an individual. This is a happy, busy school, where every student is encouraged to become more adaptable, independent and self-reliant, to "achieve success and aim for excellence".

I am proud to be the Headteacher of Archers Court School. In the words of OFSTED, this is a "good school …. Where standards are rising in line with the national trend. Students have positive attitudes, they behave well and this helps them to be good learners". Archers Court is a dynamic, supportive and forward looking school, where a dedicated, enthusiastic and talented staff have high expectations for every child they teach.

FACILITIES

We have well qualified teaching staff assisted by a substantial number of support staff with a wide range of administrative and technical skills, such as ICT Network Manager, Design Technology Technician, Science Technicians, Learning Support Assistants, office and Learning Centre staff and a Learning Mentor to support our GCSE students and help them reach their learning targets.

Over the past two years the school’s facilities have improved dramatically. We now have:

  • Eight well equipped Science laboratories; two new laboratories were built in 2003.
  • A superb Design Technology suite which contains a CAD/CAM Scantek room, two new Food Technology rooms, a new Graphics room, a new Textile room and two newly refurbished workshops.
  • Seven Maths rooms and six ICT classrooms – all with interactive whiteboards.
  • A new sports hall, a gym, a multi games area and extensive playing fields for athletics, rugby, football, etc.
  • New French, Spanish and History classrooms.
  • Specialist accommodation for Business Studies, English, Geography, Art, Music and Drama.
  • Newly refurbished Learning Centre with computers, library books and a spacious area for private study.
  • Our school grounds were improved in September when new benches, basketball posts, netball hoops and five-a-side/cricket play walls were added.
  • Video Conference facilities and online learning.

CURRICULUM

Special Educational Needs

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator leads a team of full-time SEN teachers and part-time auxiliaries. While most students receive in-class support, some receive intensive individual attention. Handwriting and reading workshops are held every morning, and support for GCSE examination candidates is offered after school. Computer aided learning is an important part of our SEN provision. There are close links with parents and external agencies. Our comprehensive SEN policy is available on request.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

All students follow National Curriculum programmes of study in Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, Information Technology, Technology, Physical Education, Art, Music and Drama. Our Year 7 students study one modern foreign language (French) and French and Spanish in Years 8 and 9. Our students are mostly taught in sets to ensure they reach their full potential and have plenty of exam practice to help them prepare for their SATS exams.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)

All students follow National Curriculum programmes of study to GCSE level in he following compulsory subjects: Mathematics (2 GCSEs – Maths and Statistics), English (Language and Literature or Language and Drama), Double Science, ICT (GNVQ), RE and PE. They can also opt to study three additional subjects from: History, Geography, Business Studies (GNVQ), French, Spanish, GCSE PE, Sociology, Art, Music, Design Technology and Child Care.

Post 16

Post 16 is a time for branching out and our students at this level play an important role in the life of Archers Court. The staff value the contribution made by these senior students and in particular their work as prefects. Team work forms a central part of Post 16 life giving students the opportunity to take on increased responsibility and further develop their skills.

At Archers Court we offer a diversity of courses for Post 16 students including a range of A levels, AS levels, AVCEs and a very successful Nursery Nursing Course leading to the nationally recognised CACHE qualification.

Top A level student Mark Cummings gained 'A' grades in Maths, (scoring two perfect 100%s of two of his Maths papers), Further Maths and ICT and a 'B' grade in Science. He also took the Advanced Extension Award and gained a merit pass:

"It is due to the excellent support I received from my teachers, that I achieved three 'A' grades and was able to accept a place reading Maths at the University of Warwick".

HIGH EXPECTATIONS

"I’m taking nine GCSEs. I’m aiming to get Grade C or above in every subject. The extra revision lessons will be important for me. They really help to boost our grades.
My favourite subject is ICT. I am currently making my own web site on 'Future Fashion!'"

- Jamie Breur

We have high expectations for our students and individual success matters to us. Academic achievement is clearly a priority and every year we are able to celebrate outstanding performance. A number of students achieve nine or more GCSE passes at grade A*-C, but we are proud of all students whose results reflect their enthusiasm, effort and commitment.

Success at A level and in AVCEs has enabled many of our students to continue their studies to degree level.

Achieving success requires support and at Archers Court this is always close at hand. Our students enjoy using the Learning Centre and its resources, and staff provide encouragement and advice.

Individual performance and progress is closely monitored by the form tutor through regular review and subject discussion.

Aspen2

Our unique Aspen2 unit is housed in purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities. It provides for students with a wide range of complex special educational needs, including those with severe learning difficulties and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

These students wherever possible, are included in mainstream lessons and are valued by recognising their rights, supporting their development and rejoicing in their success.
