Welcome to the Babraham Church of England (VC) Primary School

Babraham School Building (10K)

Babraham is one of the smallest primary schools in Cambridgeshire and, we believe, one of the best: one of the joys of a small school is that every child is known and their talents and strengths, whether academic, social, sporting or artistic can be recognised and celebrated. No one is ever overlooked.

Our school, only a few miles from Cambridge is set in beautiful countryside. We welcome children to Babraham from a wide area that includes not only our immediate locality, but also extends to all parts of the world so we feel we are a global community and we all benefit from understanding different experiences.

Babraham is a school of positive personal development, where the real joy of learning is fostered. We have developed the curriculum so that we are able to extend our creativity and encourage children to take a responsibility for their learning, to be imaginative and apply knowledge and skills in a range of different contexts. Our children are enthusiastic, confident and excellent ambassadors for our school.

CURRICULUM

At Babraham we follow the National Curriculum.  We aim to present it in a stimulating and relevant way, structured so all children have equal access to the whole curriculum.

We enjoy being creative with our curriculum.  This year as a school we plan to spend whole days together celebrating such themes as Portraits, Christmas through the Ages, Science, Multiculturalism and Maths.

Educational visits enhance and develop learning in the curriculum. The school's assessment, recording and reporting policy sets out how we track and use information for planning and reporting on the children's progress.

English

Children develop language through speaking, listening, reading, writing and drama.  There are a wide range of books within the school, through which children are taught to read with expression, pace and fluency.  We run a very successful home/school reading scheme, where children take home books twice a week.  An accompanying booklet allows for feedback between home and school.

Early writing skills are developed through a balance of using phonic (sounds) attempts at spellings and learning correct spelling patterns.  High standards of presentation and handwriting are emphasized.  Much of this work takes place within the daily literacy hour, although reading, writing and communication skills are essential in other curriculum areas.  We enrich the curriculum through book days, drama activities and cross-curricular links.  We welcome visitors into school, as we believe the children gain a great deal from varying experiences.

Children with English as an additional language are taught with the other children but also have extra support both individually (if they speak no English) or in small groups.  We have a specialist teacher who works in school every Friday morning specifically with these children.

Mathematics

We aim to equip children with knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts including those relevant to every day life, e.g. money and time.  Using and applying knowledge and skills is an important part of children's learning including the use of ICT.  The main areas for study are number, algebra, measures, shape and space and handling data.  These are taught daily in a planned programme based on the Foundation stage and the National Numeracy Strategy.

Children are taught to memorise useful data such as multiplication tables.

Science and Environmental Education

Children experience work relating to living things and their environment, materials and their characteristics, physical processes and natural phenomena through planned programmes of work.

We have two conservation areas, one of which is a pond area and a rich local environment.  We have allotments on which a variety of vegetables and flowers are grown during the summer.  A living willow arbour and tunnel were constructed to mark the millennium and continue to flourish.

We are proud of our links with the local scientific community.  We are privileged to have the services of a Babraham Institute scientist providing expertise and resources to enrich the children's learning.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

ICT is taught as a subject and is also used throughout the curriculum to enhance and extend children's learning.  Each classroom has computers with internet access and CD ROM drives.  We have a very good ratio of computers to children.  Cassette and CD players are also used as part of classroom work.  The older children learn to use our digital camera, scanners and the photocopier.

Religious Education (RE)

RE teaching is non-denominational and based on the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus.  As well as Christianity, the children are introduced to five other world faiths.  This is achieved through a variety of resources including artefacts, ICT, visits and visitors.

Collective Worship

As a Church of England voluntary controlled school, the act of Collective Worship forms an important part of each day.  It is broadly Christian but with due consideration for all children and adults in school.  It is led by a Headteacher, one of the teachers, the vicar or a visitor.

History and Geography

These subjects are taught through a programme of topics, often using the local area and combining class work with visits to places of interest.  These have included trips to Kentwell Hall (Tudors) and Wimpole Hall (Victorians).  We also have themed days within school e.g. an Ancient Egyptian and a Ancient Greeks day.  In Geography, the children study the local area in a variety of topics including rivers, the weather and improving the environment.  They also learn about more distant locations both in the UK and abroad.

Children from other cultures and places help to reinforce the understanding and awareness in these areas and we hold International events on a regular basis.

Art and Technology

Children work from imagination and observation and also look at work done by famous artists to develop their understanding and appreciation of other people's work.  Children use a range of media and are taught to develop a range of skills within each area.  As well as developing artistic and technical skills, these subjects encourage logical thought, careful planning, initiative, flexibility and perseverance.  We have a cookery unit and a wide variety of tools and materials at school.

Music

The music curriculum covers a wide variety of aspects, including singing, listening to music, playing pitched and unpitched percussion instruments, creative music making and early notation skills.  We also use electronic keyboards and ICT as part of our music work.  All children have a weekly music lesson and junior aged children are able to learn the clarinet or flute with a visiting music teacher.  Children take part in Christmas and end of year celebrations, where music plays a major role.  We also attend concerts or have visiting musicians in school.

Physical Education

PE skills and sportsmanship are developed through a programme of gymnastics, dance, movement and team games plus athletics and swimming (for Years 1-6) during the summer term.  We have a good range of games equipment and participate in the county cricket youth development programme.  Other games played include football, hockey, netball, rounders and short tennis.  A variety of sports clubs are held after school throughout the year.  We have an outdoor and adventure residential trip for the juniors every other year.

ETHOS AND AIMS

At Babraham Church of England Primary School we aim to educate our pupils to the highest possible standards within a caring Christian environment. To this end we:

  • Create a stimulating environment where curiosity and the enjoyment of learning is paramount

ORGANISATION

We have three classes, with flexible grouping and smaller than average numbers. This enables us to put an emphasis on individual work and help all children to achieve their full potential.

CORE INFO FOR PARENTS

General Information Footpath at Babraham (11K)

This section of the website contains information specifically aimed at parents of pupils of Babraham School.

Information on specific areas can be accessed via the links on the right-hand side of this page.  You may also wish to visit the news pages for up-to-date information on what is going on in and around the school and in the individual classes.  General school information is listed below.

School Hours:

9.00 am to 12 noon and 1.00 to 3.20 pm with a lunch break between 12 noon and 1 pm.  There is a morning break for all children from 10.30-10.45 and an afternoon one, for Infants only, at approx 2.30 depending on work in progress.

Children should arrive between 8.40 and 8.55 am, allowing time to be ready for a prompt start at 9.00 am.  A member of staff will be on duty from 8.40 am. We can not normally provide supervision before that time or after 3.20 pm.  Please note that our registers close at 9.05 am and your child may be recorded as an unauthorised absence if we have no message or explanation.

Collection arrangements are the responsibility of parents.  Please let us know if normal arrangements have to be changed.  Please notify the school office if your child arrives or leaves the school (with a parent or carer) during the school day.  Class 1 children should be collected from the gate by the Foundation Stage Play area.  Class 2 should be collected from KS1 library and Class 3 from their door leading out to the playground.  If your child goes to the Children's (After School) Club, the staff will collect your child from the main building.

School Behaviour Policy and Practice

Our policy and practice are based on our philosophy and ethos.  We emphasise positive behaviour in an atmosphere where all members of the school can feel safe, respected and appreciated.  We have a code of behaviour called our 'Golden Rules', which the children have drawn up.  We encourage high standards of mutual respect for all members of the school community.

Rules are for everyone's safety and are known to parents and pupils.  Pastoral care is shared by all the staff and discipline is maintained by reasoning and/or appropriate sanctions.  The school community has a no tolerance policy towards bullying in whatever form and is committed to helping both victims and perpetrators although such behaviour is very rare.

A behaviour policy, including a statement on bullying, has been drawn up by staff and governors and is available to anyone who wishes to see it.

Meals at School

Nutritionally balanced school dinners, including a vegetarian option, are available for any child who would like them.  We operate 'family grouping' at lunchtime so that older children can help younger ones.  Meals are prepared by Cambridge Catering Services and finished in our school kitchen.  The cost is currently £8.75 per week, or £59.50 for the half term, payable in advance to Cambridgeshire County Council.

Alternatively children may bring a packed lunch that should be packed in a strong container with your child's name on it.  No glass containers or canned drinks please.  If a child forgets a packed lunch, they will be provided with a cooked meal and the money requested from you the following day.

Health Issues

We ask you to notify us in writing of any medical conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes etc) that affect your child, so that we can be aware of, and be supportive of, their needs.

We can only administer prescription medicines (after consultation with parents) or the completion of courses of antibiotics.  We do not administer painkillers.  If your child needs to have medicines administered during the school day a member of staff may do this on a strictly voluntary basis.  Please ask the school secretary for an administration of medicines form that must be completed by a parent or carer.  All medicines are stored in a locked medical cabinet in the school office.  In case of accidents, first aid is administered by trained staff members.  Parents will be notified either through our accident book or directly by phone.

We have a link nurse who offers advice.  She also supports health issues including related work in school e.g. our sex education programme.  The school dental service make regular visits to school.  Other health care professionals can be contacted if and when necessary, after consultation with parents.

School Dress / Uniform

Children are encouraged to wear our uniform colours, which are:

White or navy polo shirt
Grey trousers, skirt or pinafore
Navy jersey, cardigan or sweatshirt
Summer dresses in red or blue checks or stripes

Items of school clothing, attractively embroidered with the school logo, are available from school.  Please see the school administrator to order these.

We ask that children who do not wear school uniform come suitably dressed for school.  No denim jeans, baggy trousers or shorts, sports or inappropriate casual clothing such as shoestring vest tops should be worn.  The wearing of jewellery, except watches or small stud type earrings, is not allowed nor is the wearing of make up or nail varnish.  Children should not wear shoes with heels more than 2 cm high as these are dangerous.

Please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school every day. It should consist of:

A plain, fitted T shirt (preferably white)
A pair of sports shorts (preferably navy blue)
Plimsolls. (black with elastic insets)
A drawstring cloth bag or plastic carrier bag that can be easily hung on their peg.

Children may wear tracksuits in cold weather for PE outside.

If your child wishes to join any of the after school sports clubs, the appropriate equipment will need to be provided.

During the summer term, all children in years 1-6 will need swimming kit in a waterproof bag:

Swimming costume and towel
Hat (if worn)
Warm jersey

An apron or other suitable 'cover-up' is needed for art and technology work.

ALL CLOTHING SHOULD BE CLEARLY MARKED WITH THE PUPIL'S NAME.

Lost property is kept in a box in the cloakroom area and regularly shown to pupils.  Please check this if you can not find belongings.

Admissions Policy

We follow the County guidelines on admissions, with children living in Babraham or attending Babraham Nursery having priority after medical recommendation and naming of the school on a statement of special needs.  (Babraham is our catchment area but as it is a very small village, we usually have plenty of room for children from other areas).

Our published admission number (PAN) is 12.  Children beginning school start in the September of the school year during which they attain the age of 5 years.  However children of any age may be accepted at the beginning or during the school year subject to the schools admissions policy.

Parents have the right of appeal to the Local Education Authority against a decision made by the school in relation to an admission.

Arrangements for starting school

You will be notified of your child's place at Babraham at the end of the April before admission in September.  We have an induction programme in the summer term when children are invited into Class 1 for two half days and there is also a 'new' parents evening.

All reception children born before 31st December usually start full time in September.  Other reception children may also start full time in September or we can be flexible about part time attendance during the first term if, after discussion with school, you or we feel this is more suitable.

The school year runs from 1st September to 31st August.  We have a liaison programme with Babraham Nursery and other local nurseries and playgroups that runs throughout the school year.
