The school, situated in the North West of Dundee, built in 1960, was formed in 1997 by the merger of two of the city secondary schools, Rockwell High School and Kirkton High School, on the former Kirkton site. The school roll is currently over 700.
There has been considerable upgrading of the building in recent years. The main block was reclad in 1999 with refurbishment of the Art and Design Department. Phase 2, completed in August 2001, has seen major work completed in Social Education, Home Economics and the addition of practice rooms in Music. In 2003 there was recladding and refurbishment in English, Geography, Modern Languages and Support for Learning. New Chemistry Labs and pupil toilets were completed in August 2003. The improvements in PE, through our community sports partnership, and to the Assembly Hall were completed in November 2005 and a Biology Lab has been refurbished in spring 2006.
Teaching takes place in three main areas with central offices, Guidance Suite, Assembly Hall, Dining Hall and Resource Centre. The school is well resourced with up to date Business Studies, Computing, Technology Laboratories and Fitness Suite.

In S1, pupils are allocated to classes of mixed ability and follow a common course.
The subjects taken by all pupils in S1 are:
English, French, Mathematics, Geography, History, Modern Studies, Science, Art, Music, Home Economics, Technical Education, Religious Education, Physical Education, Computer Education and Social Education.
The timetable is organised to deliver a balance of experiences for pupils entering secondary school for the first time.
In S2, pupils continue with the common course with the additional subject of Business Studies. Science is taught as Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
In January, pupil progress reports are sent home. At this time, an initial survey of choice of subjects to be studies in S3/4 is carried out among S2 pupils. Parents are invited to discuss choices at a Parents’ Evening.
We believe it is important that pupils are offered courses suited to their abilities, preferences and, where relevant, to any ideas they have about their careers. Accordingly, each pupil is interviewed individually to ensure that the correct balance of subjects is being chosen. Final course choices are made during the last term of S2.
Baldragon Academy pupils are able to study a maximum of 8 Standard Grade courses. Two of these, English and Mathematics, will be studied by all pupil whilst the others will be chosen from the full Scottish Council on the Curriculum recommended range of Learning Areas or Modes. In addition, all pupils will follow school based courses in Physical, Religious and Social Education. French is an entitlement for all pupils but is not compulsory.
As an alternative to Standard Grade, New National Qualification (NNQ) Courses will be available in some Modes to provide flexibility in individual choice. Standard Grade courses are offered at three levels, Foundation, General and Credit. Assessment is by examination at the end of S4. Access Courses are assessed as the pupil progresses and are certified on completion.
New National Courses (NNQs) are available in S3/S4 in a number of departments.
Final pupil choices and the most suitable level of study for each subject are discussed individually and agreed with parents. However, it must be stressed that final decisions on levels of presentation at Standard Grade will not be made until nearer the examination time. All pupils of S4 are offered the opportunity of a work experience placement for one week in the Autumn Term.
The move from S4 to S5 or from S5 to S6 again involves a selection of subjects to be studied. The choice of courses at this stage should be related to career intentions and entrance qualifications to College or University.
New National Qualification (NNQ) Courses at Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, Higher and Advanced Higher are available to S5/S6 pupils. We intend to offer a wide range of courses which build on pupil’s successes in S4. Pupils who gained Credit or good General Standard Grade Awards will be offered National Qualification (NQ) courses at Higher and Intermediate 2. Pupils who achieved at either General or Foundation will be offered courses at Intermediate 1 or Access Level. In S6 pupils may progress from their achievements in S5 to the next level. In the case of National Qualifications (NQ) Higher this will mean the possibility of studying to Advanced Level.
Pupils achievements in the Core Skills of problem solving, information technology, working with others, communication and numeracy will be measured and recorded across each of the subjects studied. Credit will be given to each component unit passed in each course. If any unit is failed the pupils and parents will be informed by the date and nature of the opportunities for re-assessment. Our aim is to provide both choice and progression for all pupils at this stage.
