Ballasalla School

Welcome
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Ballasalla School. I am very proud to be the headteacher of this school, which prides itself on being a happy school where everyone is challenged to reach his or her full potential. We are fortunate to have a staff of dedicated professionals, who are committed to their work with children and give generously of their time and talents to help the children in their care flourish.
Mrs J Barrow

PTA

Here at Ballasalla we have a small but quite active PTA. Every parent or guardian with a child at Ballasalla School is automatically a member of the PTA and invited to its meetings. In practice between 8 and 15 people attend the meetings that are usually held once or twice a term straight after school.

We are a registered charity and our aim is to raise money for the school and organise social events. We have our Annual General Meeting in November each year where candidates are invited to stand for election to the official posts.

Our first main event of the school year is usually the Rushen Silver Band Christmas Carol evening which acts as an excellent start to the festive season and is always well attended. In the dark and wintry nights of January or February we usually stage an evening such as a Beetle Drive, Quiz Night or Bingo. Our biggest fund raising event of the year is the Summer Fair which includes various displays, a fancy dress competition and all the usual stalls such as cakes, face painting, bric-a-brac and guess the weight of the cake.

All our events are well attended but we are always on the look out for more helpers and people keen to come along to the meetings with fresh ideas and a willingness to take part.

Current  Officers are:

President:  Headteacher - Jacqueline Barrow
Vice-president: Deputy Headteacher - Jan Withey
Chairman: Shelley Beer
Honorary Secretary: Sharon Roosen
Honorary Treasurer: Juana Warburton
Assistant Treasurer:  Diane Corlett

SCHOOL NURSE

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the school nurse for Ballasalla School, visiting most Monday mornings. I can be contacted through the secretary at your school office any day of the week or on 642606 (answer machine).
I am a Registered Nurse employed by Health services, my role is to provide advice, guidance and support to schools, parents and children.
When your child starts school a health assessment questionnaire is sent out to you for completion. With your consent your child is seen by a nurse to record their height, weight and to carry out hearing and vision tests. Subject to parental consent these may be repeated at any time.  Any communication you or your child may have with the school nurse is done on a strictly confidential basis. As parents you may feel your child needs support with: friendships, bedwetting, bullying, eating patterns and difficulties within families e.g. bereavement/ separation or general health issues all of which can impact on your child's education.

We work closely with other professionals and teaching staff to support vulnerable children. I will deliver health education (safety with medicines, hand washing, puberty) to your child within the classroom setting. At the end of their Year 6 I will help with their transition to secondary school and explain about my drop-in service provided at Castle Rushen High School.
