Welcome to Barley Lane School

Established in 1981, Barley Lane is a small school situated on the outskirts of Exeter. We currently provide education and support for up to 46 boys with emotional and behavioural difficulties from around Devon.

Mission Statement

t Barley Lane we seek to create a safe and stimulating environment in which all pupils reach their full potential. Our primary concern is that all our pupils gain full access to the National Curriculum and while doing so, grow emotionally and develop self discipline. During this process they will grow in confidence and be able to adjust their problematic social behaviour and hopefully start to overcome any previously held barriers to learning.

Barley Lane places great emphasis on attaining basic academic and life skills such as literacy, numeracy and ICT; we do this by providing a supportive and individually tailored learning programme.

Positive behaviour is always rewarded and negative behaviour is challenged so that pupils can start to take responsibility for their own actions.

Parents and/or carers are continually informed of pupil’s progress and are encouraged to be close partners in our school philosophy.

In order to achieve our Mission, we shall aim to:

Ensure that quality learning takes place.

Meet the individual needs of all the pupils.

Make Barley Lane a place where all people are valued and respected.

Make Barley Lane a stepping-stone to a positive future for all pupils.

Raise pupils self confidence and self esteem.

The school follows the National Curriculum and provides education that is broadly similar to that which a pupil would receive in a mainstream school.  However, the small classes mean that individual help can be given to pupils who have particular difficulties.

English, Mathematics, Science, Information Technology, Design & Technology, History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Music, PSHE/CZ and Physical Education are all part of the curriculum.
