The school is organised into year groups and approximately 47 reception children are admitted each year. Children begin school at the point of entry prior to their fifth birthday. In the September following a child's eleventh birthday they transfer to Exmouth Community College.
The Exmouth schools have worked together to develop common policies of record-keeping and close links with the Community College ensure there is continuity and coherence for every child.
We aim to create a caring, secure environment where everyone will work happily together. Each child will be encouraged to be hardworking and self-disciplined during their time at Bassetts.
We believe that children should be able to read, write, spell and compute confidently. They need to learn the basics and learn them well. Children should be able to use these skills and apply them in all situations. We also believe that children should enjoy the process. We aim at all times to match this learning experience to the needs of individual children to produce the best results.
The National Curriculum is followed by all children and with Devon's Curriculum Statement forms the basis of all planning and learning. The National Curriculum is made up of core subjects and foundation subjects. It contains guidelines and prescribes skills and concepts that children are entitled to be taught. The core subjects are English, Science and Mathematics, the foundation subjects are History, Geography, Music, Art, Technology, Information Technology and Physical Education. We also follow the Devon Agreed Syllabus for RE (2001). This has a broad multi-faith approach which is reflected in the daily acts of worship.
We have school policies to cover the teaching of the National Curriculum and also areas of school management such as discipline. These policies are drawn up by the teachers and ratified by the Governing Body. The policies are available in school for parents to read if you wish to see them. |
