Our Campuses

Bath Spa University has several campuses, two of which are exceptionally beautiful and historically significant. They provide a truly inspirational setting in which to study and live, and are well equipped to meet your academic, social and cultural needs.

Our History

The University can trace its origins back to 1898, when the earliest of its parts were formed as the Bath Academy of Art. The Newton Park campus was first leased by Bath Teacher Training College in 1947 from the Duchy of Cornwall. Bath College of Higher Education was formed in 1975 from the merger of two colleges; Bath College of Education and Newton Park College of Education.

Newton Park

Newton Park, at Newton St Loe, is the largest of the campuses, where all courses and subjects except Art and Design are located. Newton Park is a wonderful parkland estate, leased from the Duchy of Cornwall. The grounds were designed by the well-known landscape architect Capability Brown in the eighteenth century. The campus boasts its own lake, nature reserve, woods and farmland, along with beautiful historically important buildings. Several of the period buildings have been refurbished to provide teaching and study rooms - such as the 14th century Castle tower, the oldest building on the campus and a scheduled ancient monument.

Newton Saint Loe Castle

Another scheduled ancient monument, the Castle Gatehouse (shown above), formed part of the original St Loe's Castle with origins in Norman times, and is now a Creative Writing Centre, equipped with the very latest computers and audio visual equipment.

A number of significant improvements have been made to the Newton Park campus in recent years, including a new Students' Union, greatly enhanced library and IT facilities, a new Refectory and a new University Theatre.

Every facility you need as a student can be found at Newton Park. Bath Spa University's administrative centre is housed in a Georgian manor house (below) overlooking the lakes and woods. The more recent parts of the campus blend sympathetically with the historic buildings.

For entertainment you can make use of our on-site social and sports facilities. There are plenty of opportunities for a variety of sports. Music and arts enthusiasts will be able to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities provided by the Michael Tippett Centre to see (and be involved in!) performances and exhibitions. The Michael Tippett Centre is a beautiful building - the only purpose-built concert hall in Bath - and is used both as a teaching resource and as a major venue for the arts in the region.

Newton Park is a wonderful rural setting just four miles from the lively city centre of Bath itself, and within easy reach of Bristol, some nine miles away.

Sion Hill

All Art and Design studies are located in the Sion Hill and Somerset Place sites, which are both found in the Lansdown district of of Bath. In a residential area of the city renowned for its architecture, you are within walking distance of the city centre.

Sion Hill is delightful, equipped with the latest facilities and resources for the study of art and design. Sion Hill is surrounded by its own attractively landscaped and peaceful gardens; the site originally belonged to a nineteenth century mansion house, and although the house was destroyed in the war, the ornamental grounds remain.

As an Art or Design student at Sion Hill you will enjoy the friendly community atmosphere, but you will also appreciate its extensive facilities. You will discover well equipped studios and workshops in which to pursue your studies: graphic communication studios, electronic media workshops, studios for art, textiles and sculpture, workshops for wood, etching, lithography and silkscreen. In June each year the site becomes a showpiece of student talent as the School of Art and Design hosts its annual degree shows - an event that always draws a large and appreciative audience from near and far.
