About Postgraduate Study

Postgraduate study at Bath Spa has a number of attractive features. Our postgraduate awards have developed over the years - often with invaluable input from experts within associated industries - to provide opportunities for advanced study that are both academically challenging and vocationally relevant. The University operates within a vigorous research culture in which students undertaking MPhil and PhD degrees excel, working at the cutting edge of their fields of study.

Why Undertake Postgraduate Study?

In recent years participation in higher education has increased substantially and more and more students have the opportunity of undertaking a first degree. In this context a postgraduate qualification is becoming increasingly attractive to many students. For some career paths further study is a requirement. For others a postgraduate qualification gives an 'edge' in a highly competitive jobs market, and several of our taught Master's courses have a highly vocational focus.

Other students find the main motivation for postgraduate study in a deep-rooted interest in their subject.

As a postgraduate student you will derive considerable personal satisfaction from pursuing your studies to postgraduate level, and you may decide to extend your research further still and join our growing body of research students undertaking doctorate level work.

Research Programmes

Research programmes leading to the award of MPhil or PhD are described in more detail. Our staff expertise is such that research of a high standard is supervised in each School, and we have built an excellent reputation for research.

Our Students and Staff

The 5,000 or so students at Bath Spa form a richly diverse student body: one third male and two thirds female; around 33% are over the age of 25; some 4,000 students are undergraduates and over 1,000 are following postgraduate, professional development and research programmes. We are part of a wide international community, with between 200 and 400 international students at Bath Spa each year, as well as international student exchanges and research links.

The staff at Bath Spa University are committed to making your time as a student here as rewarding and enjoyable as possible. There are around 250 lecturers, 50 technicians, and 230 support staff in total, so the staff/student ratio is excellent. Teaching staff are accessible, supportive, and passionate about their subjects.

Accessible and Supportive

We have built our success on accessibility and equality of opportunity. The unique study and social environment we offer is a key factor in our distinctiveness - and in our popularity. Our students come from a range of backgrounds and cultures, from all parts of this country and overseas, and with a variety of academic credentials. We are committed to meeting the academic hopes and expectations of each student, and we ensure that students are given the individual attention they deserve.

The Bath Spa Community

When our students are asked what they like about Bath Spa University they frequently comment that it's "small and friendly". With around 5,000 students it's small enough to have a close-knit community feel, but large enough to provide a good range of courses and excellent facilities. One of the exciting things about being a student is the diversity of the student population. You will be able to share experiences and ideas with people from similar backgrounds to yourself, and with people from very different backgrounds. For example, we welcome students from a range of ethnic and cultural backgrounds, from this country and abroad, from families new to higher education, disabled students, and mature students. There is an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance amongst students and staff, firmly embedded in a policy of equality and diversity.

Funding Success

Artswork is Bath Spa's brand new Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, through the dynamic work of six high-specification labs - two in each of the School of Music and Performing Arts, School of English and Creative Studies and Bath School of Art and Design. It presents an exciting opportunity to participate in specially designed modules, innovative projects and student-led initiatives. This will maximise your potential for employability and self-employability in the creative industries. It will also explore the greater competencies and lifelong values that learning in the creative arts can bring.

Artswork will form a creative interface with employers, industry bodies and others in the wider world ensuring that when you graduate you'll know what's what and who's who in the creative industries. And, through our developing programme of active employer and industry engagement, they'll know about Bath Spa, about Artswork and, importantly, about you.

Our Financial Strength

Bath Spa University's success is underpinned by sound financial management. It is ranked in the top five out of 144 universities in terms of its surplus to debt ratio (source HE Yearbook 2004/05 edition), and in the last six years its total income and its total reserves have doubled.

Our strong financial position has enabled us to invest significant sums in our estates infrastructure - all within budget and without recourse to borrowing.

As a student joining us in 2007 you will benefit from the most extensive programme of building improvements in Bath Spa University's history undertaken in 2005/06. This includes substantially increased and improved Students' Union facilities, enlarged library, extended ICT facilities, a new refectory at the Newton Park campus, and a brand new performing arts building and theatre to complement existing excellent facilities.
