Bell Baxter High School

There are currently about 1,700 pupils, together with over 100 teachers at Bell Baxter High School. In addition to this the school is supported by a keen army of auxiliary teachers and a large number of non-teaching staff.

The South Wing of the Carslogie Road building was reopened at the start of Session 02/03. This marked the completion of a major stage in the building's development plan.

The Craft & Design block was completed for the start of the 03/04 Session. Although the Physical Education facilities have also been refurbished there are still plans for further refurbishments

FUTURE

Bell Baxter would still like to see its plan of having an artificial grass covered playing field on site met. Such a facility would be a great asset to both the pupils of the school and the community at large. With your help we may still see this dream of ours realised.

PAST

Bell Baxter High School was descended from the Cupar Grammar School and was founded in 1889 when the Madras Academy combined with the Sir David Baxter's Institute for Young Ladies.

Since 1962, the accommodation for the school has been on two main sites; Carslogie Road and Westport. The two sites are approximately three-quarters of a mile apart.

The oldest part of Westport building was first used in 1890 with the rest of the building being built in 1929. Because of the large number of pupils using this site a great number of wooden huts were build to accommodate them.

The Carslogie Road building was opened in 1962 and over the years there have been on-going refurbishments here which has resulted in the school (almost) being able to operate from one site.

NEWSLETTER

Dear Parent

It is difficult for me to believe that I have already been at Bell Baxter for seven weeks. I

was delighted to be appointed as Rector and excited at the prospect of leading a school

which is held in such high regard.

I have spent much of my first weeks introducing myself to staff and pupils as well as

getting to know the school. The commitment of so many young people to study and extra

curricular activities, combined with the professionalism of staff has impressed me hugely.

I am determined to maintain the best of Bell Baxter but to seek improvement, where

necessary, to provide the best possible education for all.

I expect a high standard of behaviour and adherence to our school dress code from pupils.

This has already been made clear at assemblies and has also been a theme of visits to

classes by senior staff. I do hope that I can expect your full support in maintaining our

high standards.

I am also keen to encourage parents to play an active role in the life and work of the

school. Research shows that when parents are involved in their child’s education, children

do better at school.

From August, a change in legislation will see a Parent Council replace the School Board.

All parents are automatically members of a Parent Forum and will be consulted on the

formation of the Parent Council. To facilitate this, I invite you to join me at a meeting in

the school on Tuesday 26th June at 7.30pm. At this meeting I will lead discussion about the

various options for our Parent Council. These options will then be the subject of further

consultation with parents before a constitution for the Parent Council is agreed. If you

have any questions regarding this or would like to discuss it further, prior to the meeting,

please do not hesitate to contact me.

In any case, as member of the Parent Forum you will receive information about the school

and its activities. You will also be invited to take an active involvement in the school in

ways and at times which suit you. Furthermore the Parent Council will ask your opinion

on issues relating to Bell Baxter and the education it provides.

It is my firm belief, as Rector, that we must work together to ensure that your child

receives the best possible education during their time here. Let me assure you I will do

everything within my power to achieve this.

I look forward to meeting you all over the coming months.

Philip Black

Rector.
