Belmont House School is an independent co-educational day school located in Newton Mearns, Glasgow.  Every child is valued for the individual that they are and is offered a personal educational experience that is second to none.

Principal's Welcome

At Belmont House School we value every child for the individual that they are and offer a personal educational experience that is second to none.  We offer a broad and balanced education of the highest standard, both within and outwith the classroom.  This website will give you a flavour of what it means to have the privilege of a Belmont House education, but these pages can only serve to give you a brief introduction to the School.  I am confident that it will encourage you to come and visit us for yourself and I would be delighted to show you our School, answer your questions and convince you that Belmont House School is, indeed, an outstanding place to learn.

With one of the smallest average class sizes of any major school in Scotland, academic standards are high and have placed Belmont House amongst the top schools in Scotland .  The School strives for success in every area of education and a flexible approach to timetabling allows for varied subject choices, while a wide range of extra-curricular activities allows each pupil to expand their interests and opportunities, laying strong foundations for their future.

Since establishing itself as a fully co-educational school in 2000, the number of girls on the school role is now in excess of 25% of its 350 pupils.  With significant numbers of girls in every year, there has been a positive change in the dynamic of the school, and recent years have seen female pupils earn appointments to senior positions of responsibilities within the student body.

In addition to the long-established and extensive programme of activites in the Performing Arts and programme of sports such as rugby, judo, fencing, tennis, cricket, athletics, golf and volleyball, activites aimed specifically at girls have been introduced including dance, netball and hockey.

The School is investing heavily in new state-of-the-art facilities and work has started on Phase 1.  This development will house a sports hall, catering facilities, Science Laboratories, IT Suites, Music Suite, Drama Studio and general classroom space housed on two levels.   A new management suite was opened in August 2006 providing quality offices and additional classroom space.  This facility will greatly enhance the learning and teaching environment for the pupils and the extra space generated will permit improvements to be made in the main building allowing even greater curriculum flexibility.

Belmont House School is focusing on the future with great optimism, an expanding school role and further new facilities as we continue to strive for personal excellence for each of our pupils.

AIMS

Committed to small class sizes

At Belmont House School, we pride ourselves in providing education where the individual is of paramount importance.  Small class sizes allow each individual to flourish and achieve their full potential.

Average class sizes:

  • Nursery - Junior Six:  15 pupils
  • Transitus - Senior One:  15 pupils
  • Senior Two - Senior Four:  12 pupils
  • Senior Five & Senior Six:  8 pupils

The maximum class size is 20 at any stage in the School (16 in the Nursery)

For all our pupils we aim to:

  • Cultivate an environment that allows and encourages all pupils to develop personal excellence
  • Promote a flexible educational experience in which the individual is of paramount importance
  • Foster an atmosphere of diligence, tolerance, mutual respect and concern for others
  • Sustain a safe, supportive and welcoming environment
  • Encourage a dynamic parternship between all members of the School community

CURRICULUM

Each child is an individual:  we believe that the education on offer at Belmont House reflects this.  We aim to maximise their unique talents and pride ourselves in promoting personal excellence through offering an individual approach to education throughout the School, from Nursery to Senior 6.  Our class sizes throughout the School are small, with an average size of 16 in the Junior School, 15 in the lower Senior School and 10 in the upper Senior School.

Junior School

A balanced, integrated curriculum is on offer throughout the School.  In the Nursery, we aim to develop the individual child by encouraging the social, emotional, intellectual and physical aspects of their development according to their own ability and level of maturity.  All are encouraged to work to their full potential as they are introduced to the relevant pre-reading, writing and numerical concepts which prepare them for a smooth transition into Junior 1.

In the Junior School, a secure grounding in the basic skills of Mathematics and Language is provided.  Environmental Studies, Art, Music, French, Computing and the general use of ICT provide further breadth and balance to the curriculum.  Senior School specialist staff teach throughout the Junior School and in the latter stages (Junior 5 & 6) over 25% of the timetable is delivered by senior staff, often in specialist accommodation, in liaison with the class teacher.  This ensures that the pupils benefit from the close cooperation and communication between Junior and Senior School that is a direct result of the entire School being on one site.

Senior School

The Senior School begins in Transitus (equivalent of Primary 7) and all pupils follow a curriculum designed to provide challenge and stimulation, and which includes a wide range of academic subjects.  Time is also allowed for Personal and Social Education, Religious Education and Physical Education.  At the end of Senior 1, all pupils choose eight subjects to take on into Scottish Qualifications Authority courses in Senior 2 and Senior 3.  The choice of subjects is considerable but English, Mathematics, a foreign language and Computing are compulsory.  From Session 2007-2008 onwards, all pupils will be presented for SQA Examinations at Standard Grade, Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 by the end of Senior 3.  SQA Higher Examinations are taken at the end of Senior 5, with five subjects being the norm, and Advanced Highers are offered in Senior 6.  These place an emphasis on independent study and are an ideal preparation for University life.  Additional Highers are also available in Senior 6.
