The school aims to:

·        provide a happy and secure environment in which each pupil has the opportunity to fulfil his or her full potential.

  • encourage pupils to care for and support each other, to be tolerant of    other points of view, and to develop a strong sense of what is right and wrong.

·        establish and maintain a friendly, professional working relationship between home and school.

Bloemfontein Primary School

We at Bloemfontein Primary School believe that you, as parents, are the most important  people in your child's life. You have already taught them a great deal before they come to us.

We aim to work in partnership with you, valuing and developing what your child already knows.

We recognise that all children are different. They each learn differently and develop at different rates.

We aim to provide a curriculum which puts the child and his/her needs at the centre of learning.  This will be based on the Early Learning Goals that form the Foundation Level. The foundation level runs from the age of three until the end of their reception year.

When you visit the school prior to your child joining us you will be given helpful booklets, which we hope will help you and child during this new stage of their life.

Daily lessons

Whilst in Reception, your child’s day will be very different to the rest of the schools. The Reception curriculum aims to underpin all future learning by supporting and developing the child.

The foundation curriculum is planned into 6 areas; each area is made up of Early Learning Goals.

Early Learning Goals

Play

A large part of your child’s learning experiences will be through structured play activities. Well-planned play is the way in which young children learn with enjoyment and challenge

Play gives children an opportunity to practice and build up ideas, concepts and skills. Play also helps children to think creatively and to co-operate and communicate with others.

“...play has a fundamental role in early childhood education, supplying the foundation upon  which learning is built. Play that is well planned and pleasurable helps children to think, increase their understanding and to improve their language competence. It allows children to be creative, to explore and investigate materials, to experiment and to draw and test their conclusions. Such experience is important in catching and sustaining children’s interests and motivating their learning as individuals and in cooperation with others…”

Visiting the school

We invite you to bring your child into school during the term prior to their entrance. This is a very valuable chance for your child to get to know a bit about the school and to meet the other new children. If at all possible we recommend you take up this opportunity. Your child will be invited to stay for a school lunch with you and then to leave you for a range of activities with their new teacher. You are welcome to stay in the Entrance Hall and take the opportunity to meet other parents and buy items of school uniform and book bags

If you are considering our school and would like to look round it is advisable to make an appointment so that the Head teacher can be free to show you around and answer questions

Parents of new starters will be informed of school visits during the summer term.

School Council

School council meets at least twice a term. The pupils vote for their representatives at the beginning of each year. We have 2 representatives from years1-6. Different members of staff are responsible for each term.

So far the council have looked into having a school pet but decided that it would be better to have a wild life area in our school grounds. This area is in the process of being developed.

At present the council are looking at the feasibility of picnic tables outside.

The minutes are taken by a member of the council and shared with the children in school.
