CURRICULUM

The curriculum for Primary School children in Scotland is described as the "5-14" curriculum. "5" is the age of children entering school and "14" the age when they finish the second year of Secondary Education.

Methods Used

Learning in the school is based on a range of strategies, including investigating, problem-solving and discussion in addition to direct teaching methods. This often involves activities using a wide variety of materials.

Each child will be assessed to determine his or her levels of work. Group and individual methods of teaching are used so that the curriculum can be tailored as far as possible to fit the needs of each child.

Curriculum Subjects

English Language
Mathematics
Environmental Studies
Expressive Arts
Religious and Moral Education
Personal and Social Development

Modern Languages: French is introduced in Primary 6 and continued in Primary 7. Pupils gain a progressive knowledge in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

There are a wide range of after school clubs run by staff, parents and friends.

This year these include

  • Six football teams
  • Basketball club
  • Gym clubs for all age groups
  • Ski Club
  • Chess Club
  • Choir
  • Scripture Union

SPECIAL NEEDS

The Education Authority actively promotes the inclusion of pupils with special needs and with significant special needs. Information about the Services open to schools is available from the Education Authority in their Support for Learning document. This also gives details of the Special Needs Audit, which helps decide if a school requires additional resources to support the needs of pupils with learning difficulties.

Learning Support

Special provision is made for children with learning difficulties. Children who have missed out on some important step or maybe a little slow in Reading, Language or Numbers are regularly taken by a Specialist Learning Support Teacher. This may be individually or in a small class.

Support is usually given in class since the aim is to enable children to work in a normal class environment. Occasionally children may be withdrawn to a quiet area to work on specific tasks.

When children are given this extra tuition, parents are always consulted and again when they have reached a satisfactory level of competence.

UNIFORM

Children are encouraged to wear uniform. This can be the traditional form which includes shirt and tie or school polo shirts and sweatshirts.

Polo shirts and sweatshirts can be bought from the School Association. Order forms will be issued at various times during the year. You can also buy other items in the brown and yellow school colours including fleeces, hats, scarves and gym bags. School badges and ties are available from school outfitters.

You can order ties and badges from Clan House of Edinburgh. The current prices are £4.50 for badges and £3.00 for ties. There is no post and packing charge for these items.

Email them for further information at enquiry@clanhouseofedinburgh.com or telephone 0131 229 6857.

THE NURSERY

The Nursery Class has two sessions daily, morning and afternoon, with forty children in each session. The staff/children ratio is 1:10.

Applications for a place in either of these sessions can be made when a child is two years old. Children can start the Nursery class when they are three if there are places available. Parents are encouraged to stay until the child settles.

Priority is given to children who are in their pre-school year. However, please note that enrolment in the Nursery Class does not guarantee a place in Primary 1.

The Nursery provides a rich, secure and stimulating environment for pre-school children. There are plenty of opportunities for both free and structured play and through this children learn to cooperative with the others in the class.

Children have a wide choice of activities including:

  • art
  • sand and water
  • baking
  • role play
  • construction
  • small world
  • music and drama

Involvement with stories, poetry and rhymes also feature prominently

Children are introduced to Information and Communications Technology and use the Nursery computers to support learning through various software packages and to access the Internet.

In dry weather many hours are spent out of doors, either developing essential physical skills or observing seasonal changes in our Nursey garden.

The Infant Department at the school has a close relationship with the Nursery Class. There is also a strong and friendly liaison between other Nurseries in the area with two-way visits during the session.
