NURSERY

“Parents and children feel comfortable and happy, when they start school. Children in the Foundation Stage are very well cared for. This is apparent in their general demeanour and willingness to work and play.” Ofsted Feb 2002

The Nursery offers a well-established and exciting environment for your child to play and learn in. It is a spacious, self-contained, secure area, including its own outdoor play area and garden, which the children and parents help maintain.

Our Aims Are:

- To create a happy, caring, secure and fun environment.

- To encourage confidence, independence and a desire to learn by providing a stimulating environment.

- To focus on the development of the individual child, valuing and building on their previous experiences and responding to their individual needs.

- To work in partnership with parents.

- To provide a broad, balanced range of experiences.

- To provide foundations for later learning.

- To encourage good social relationships, developing self-esteem and respect of others.

Independence is encouraged and, by the time children enter Reception classes, most are taking responsibility for organising themselves.” Ofsted Feb 2002

Curriculum

The Nursery and Reception classes follow the Foundation Stage curriculum as set down by the QCA (Qualifications and Curriculum Authority). Stepping Stones and Early Learning Goals in the six areas of learning lay a secure basis for the children’s future learning. Children in the Nursery will be working along the Stepping Stones and aiming towards reaching the Early Learning Goals by the end of Reception.

“The quality and range of learning opportunities for the children in the Foundation Stage are good. The curriculum provided takes full account of the recommended areas of learning and national guidelines.” Ofsted Feb 2002

The six areas of learning are:

- Personal, social and emotional

- Communication, language and literacy

- Mathematical development

- Knowledge and Understanding of the world

- Physical development

- Creative development

All our activities are carefully planned and structured to provide a well-rounded and balanced learning environment for the children.  The Nursery team plans termly, weekly and daily and the plans are available for parents to look at on a notice board in the Nursery.  Assessment of the children is ongoing and informal, linking in with the Profiles completed in Reception and discussed with parents at Parents’ evenings and passed on to Reception the following year. A book of each child’s learning journey in Nursery is completed during the year, containing their significant achievements, documented through photos, observations and pieces of work. Much of the children’s learning will be through play, where children are offered a range of activities each with underlying educational purposes. Learning takes place in the Nursery through both structured and child led play. Activities provided for the children include: sand and water play, cooking, large and small construction, painting, drawing, dough, role play, computer (with internet access) music, sharing books, jigsaws, games, circle time, singing, outdoor play. The Nursery follows a consistent daily routine.

“The well-organised routines in each of the classes enable all children to feel secure and grow in confidence.” Ofsted Feb 2002
