WELCOME!!!

Bryanston is a school which rejoices in its motto: et nova et vetera. We're a young enough school to have a crystal clear vision of our direction and values, much of them described by our founder in 1928, and these imbue all we do here. We are proud to teach pupils to learn, rather than treating them as so many empty vessels to be passively filled with facts. We're also clear what are the important traditions for a school: at Bryanston they are those which encourage independence, individuality, and thinking, as well as being able to learn from living in a loving community which fast becomes, and remains, a family.

BELIEFS AND VALUES

Bryanston has high academic standards, good examination results and levels of achievement which reflect considerable 'added value'. Sporting performance is impressive and the School enjoys a strong reputation for the Arts and Design & Technology.

Such things are excellent, but we aim to provide more. We believe that education should impart a real sense of meaning and purpose and develop open and enquiring minds. We value creativity, individuality and variety and we want our young people to fulfil their talents wherever they lie. At the same time, we seek to nurture integrity, responsibility, compassion and self-discipline within the context of the demands set by the lively school community.

FACILITIES

The School has outstanding teaching and recreational facilities.

There are purpose built centres for Technology, Music and Art, a modern professional theatre, a comprehensive Sports Complex, Riding Stables and 56 acres of playing fields bounded by the River Stour. The remainder of the estate provides an exceptionally beautiful garden for the School.

ACADEMIC EDUCATION

Bryanston aims to teach pupils not just subject content but also how to learn, how to manage their time and, as they get older, how to undertake research. In addition to class teaching there is, therefore, increasing time given to supervised private work (Assignments) as a pupil moves up the school. Academic effort and achievement and all the other activities in which a pupil has been involved are recorded on a Chart, which provides the agenda for a pupil's weekly meeting with his/her personal tutor. In this way, progress is carefully directed and monitored. In addition, individual teaching support is provided in the Sixth Form by one-to-one work review or 'correction' periods.

Every pupil is encouraged to follow as broad a curriculum as possible. In the First Year, all pupils will, if at all possible, study Latin (many from scratch), French and German as well as Physics, Biology and Chemistry. All learn an orchestral instrument free of charge in their first term. Technology is compulsory during the first three years and there are opportunities to try many different sports.

A wide range and virtually any combination of subjects can be taken at GCSE, AS and A Level and all pupils follow a carefully constructed Personal, Social and Religious Education course. Subject choices are made in consultation with parents and tutors. There is no streaming, but setting is used in a number of areas, principally Maths, Sciences and Languages.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR

It is our belief that a sound, comprehensive education includes teaching pupils to appreciate their own strengths and weaknesses and to be tolerant of those of others; helping them to develop self-reliance and a sense of responsibility towards the community; and giving them the opportunity to explore a wide range of activities which may provide a basis for positive use of leisure. Accordingly, all Bryanstonians participate in adventure education, community and social service and extra-curricular activities.

The challenges of these programmes may culminate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and an impressive number of pupils achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals.

In order to give pupils as much experience as possible of their subject, academic departments organise field trips, study visits and modern language exchanges. Other opportunities abroad include sport and music tours and the annual Lower Sixth Form expedition to Nepal.

BOARDING

There are separate Houses for boys and girls. All First Year boys go into one of two junior Houses. At the end of their First Year, boys will express a preference for the friends they would like to have with them in a senior House, to which they are promoted for their remaining four years. Girls are in the same House throughout their time in the School, the two systems being designed in the light of experience.

During their junior years, pupils share bedroom and study accommodation with several others; lower Sixth Form accommodation is in double study bedrooms and all upper Sixth Formers have their own rooms.

All Houses have a social area and small kitchens for making hot drinks and snacks. Each House is in the care of a housemaster or housemistress (known at Bryanston as a 'hsm'), who is assisted by a matron, a team of teaching staff and House prefects.
