Achieve college aims within an agreed set of values.
If a student is admitted from a special school post Year 7 it is recognised that the student may require a high level of support in order to help them integrate fully into what may be a very different school environment. Again individual needs are considered and a phased integration process can be implemented with the support of the LEA. This may include accepting the student for a day or two days a week over a set period of time or extended full time integration with a set date for a review of the successfulness of the integration scheme before a decision on transfer is formally agreed.
Progression of Students from Year 6 to Year 7
The work of the Year 7 Liaison Teacher highlights early on in the Year 6 academic year, children who are regarded as having learning difficulties. Visits are made by the Learning Support Coordinator during the summer term to a number of feeder Primary Schools.This affords the opportunity to discuss with the class teacher or Ancillary Welfare Assistant children who have particular learning difficulties. Samples of students work can be viewed and strengths and weaknesses noted.
In addition to this the Learning Support Co-ordinator visits the School’s main feeder Primary School, Westhaven in order to discuss students transferring to Budmouth Technology College who may not have a Statement of Educational Need but nevertheless may require a level of additional support within a mainstream comprehensive school.
Through this mechanism the Central Register of the Stages of an Assessment can be amended to ensure smooth transition.Following this all parents of children on whom a Statement of Educational Needs is in the process of being agreed; or already exists are contacted. Parents are contacted by letter and arrangements are made for the parent to meet the Learning Support Co-ordinator at the New Intake Parents’ Evening or at some other convenient time.
* A wide variety of work-related activities are offered to the students to cater for all interests, and the full ability range within the College.* All aspects of the programme are centred within the academic curriculum, and work undertaken within the programme can be assessed as GCSE coursework.* The students’ experiences are closely linked to the pastoral and profiling curriculum of the College.* All students are encouraged to build upon the experiences gained within the programme with further work-related activities.* The programme is to be seen as only one part of a ‘whole-College’ commitment to partnership between education and industry.
