ABOUT US

Schools move forward at a very swift pace and Bury Grammar School Girls is no exception but at its heart lies a tradition of academic excellence which remains as true today as at our foundation in 1884. We are keen to preserve this tradition while ensuring that our pupils make full use of our modern resources and technology.

Our emphasis is upon the individual child. Whether a young boy or girl joining our Kindergarten at the age of 3 years, a Junior School pupil, senior entrant or sixth former, your daughter or son will immediately become a part of a lively and happy community where each individual is known, where young people's opinions are heard and their achievements in all areas of school life positively acknowledged.

KINDERGARTEN

Our Kindergarten combines academic excellence with the best of modern educational practice in a caring environment where children are happy and feel secure and valued.

The self-contained Kindergarten is comfortably housed in the senior school thus benefiting from use of the hall, gymnasium, sports hall and pool.

Bright and attractive form rooms provide homely and welcoming surroundings as well as a stimulating environment in which to learn.

The combination of a dedicated and specialist staff and excellent facilities provides a broad and balanced education giving each child an opportunity to develop to her or his full potential and to take part in extra curricular activities particularly, in sport and music, either in the lunch hour or after school.

JUNIORS

In our Junior School, for girls aged 7 - 11, we aim to build upon the foundations laid in the early years and inspire in all the girls a love of learning and enthusiasm for all aspects of school life.

Purpose-built in 1997, the Junior School provides bright and spacious classrooms. There are two parallel classes in each of the four year groups. These vary in size usually from 20 - 26. Most pupils join at 7+ but a few girls join us in other years. Entry is by examination and interview. New girls tend to settle quickly because our very busy school day gives plenty of scope for them to join different group activities and make new friends and because pupils are encouraged at all times to be thoughtful and caring towards one another.

Our aim is for every girl to find and develop her own strengths. She will also be helped with those aspects of learning she may find difficult. We recognise achievement through praise and our rewards system when successes in all areas of school life are shared in our daily assembly.

SIXTH FORM

The great majority of girls progress through to the sixth form and a few join us from other schools at this stage. Entry is based upon GCSE grades (a minimum of 7 Bs usually with A grades in the subjects selected for A level study), interview and a headteacher's report. Tutorial groups are small and new students are quickly assimilated into sixth form life. Students choose 4 AS subjects from 22+ on offer and continue with 3 or 4 A2 levels in the upper sixth. The timetable is flexible and the majority of subject combinations can be accommodated.

In addition to their chosen A level subjects, all students take AS general studies, and can pursue a variety of interests, including community service and sport, within the sixth form activities programme which is organised jointly with the Boys' School.

CURRICULUM

Bury Grammar School Girls seeks to provide a broad and balanced education based on the values of courtesy, care and respect for others, common sense, hard work and integrity. We encourage the development of pupils' individual talents and abilities as far as possible. Our curriculum gives pupils experience in linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological, human and social, physical and aesthetic and creative education.

We evaluate what we teach, the ways in which we teach and those in which children learn. Teaching enables pupils to acquire new knowledge, to learn and to make progress according to their ability so that they increase their understanding and develop their skills. All pupils acquire appropriate skills in speaking and listening, literacy and numeracy.

We foster in our pupils the application of intellectual, physical or creative effort, interest in their work, and the ability to think and learn for themselves.

We provide an education, with subject matter appropriate for the ages and aptitudes of pupils, which enables all pupils within a class to make progress, including pupils with special educational needs and those for whom English is an additional language.

We believe that it is important to offer subjects additional to those in the National Curriculum in order to complement and enrich it and to enable our pupils to pursue particular strengths, interests and enthusiasms in a less prescriptive and restrictive curricular framework. An awareness of the opportunities offered by cross-curricular activities is evident at all stages.
