Calder House is a small preparatory school for children of average ability but uneven achievement. It is a co-educational day school for children aged between 5 and 13, and offers a happy and non-competitive environment.
Calder House enjoys an idyllic rural setting, and pupils benefit from an environment that is essentially peaceful and non-threatening.
We are a designated "Healthy School" and our policies on child protection, safe recruitment, anti-bullying and complaints procedures are freely available from the school office.
Our aim is to encourage our pupils to enjoy school, and to achieve the academic success of which each is capable. After about two years "time out" at Calder House, most pupils are ready to return to mainstream education.
Calder House operates a "whole school" approach, which means that remedial help is given without loss of classroom teaching. Each pupil has an individual timetable, which is devised and closely monitored to take account of the pupil's particular needs and of the requirements of the National Curriculum.
Testimonials received over the last decade demonstrate the long term effectiveness of our remedial interventions and the ongoing success of our former pupils in mainstream education
Calder House has approximately fifty full time places. The average class size is 8 or less. The pupil/staff ratio is generally 4:1 but at times, and as required, reduces to 1:1. Calder House is staffed by fully qualified and experienced teachers, who are supported by classroom assistants and by specialists and health professionals trained in dyslexic, perceptual, and language difficulties.
Almost all specific learning difficulties can be assessed and addressed within the school programme, and the school is appropriate for most dyspraxic and dyslexic children. The specialist help required is incorporated into each pupil's timetable, and forms an integral part of the day's activities.
School hours are 8.30am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, and pupils bring a packed lunch. |
