ABOUT US

Education at Canon Burrows is based on the premise that each child is made in the image of God and is special, precious and unique. Each child has the right to develop morally, spiritually, academically and physically to his or her full potential and will do so, given the right educational context.

The school building is interesting and spacious. It has a self-contained nursery unit with kitchen, toilets and play area. There are good sized classrooms. Assemblies, dance, drama and P.E. take place in a large hall which also serves as a dining room. We have a computer suite and library. There is an excellent, fully equipped stage with a most impressive sound and lighting system which has remote control.

EDUCATIONAL PROVISION

Our philosophy of education is based on the idea that children are the centre of the learning process and they can and will learn given the right conditions.

The governors main concern is to ensure that the school provides a secure, happy, caring atmosphere, a rich stimulating environment and a broad balanced and relevant curriculum. We aim to ensure that children are able to develop their full potential through challenging learning activities matched to stages of development and needs.

We aim to provide a stable environment in which all children, regardless of background or ability, can reach their personal highest standards of achievement, with the help and encouragement of staff, parents, peers and the wider community. In this way we ensure that they are able to cope with all aspects of life in modern society as responsible and caring citizens.

NURSERY

he main aim of the nursery is to provide children with a secure and stimulating environment in which they can develop a wide variety of skills and attitudes. The nursery team, which consists of a nursery nurse and teaching assistant supported by a teacher, and nursery nurse students when available, provides a wide range of structured games, play and learning activities, all of which aid children's intellectual, physical, social and emotional development. The nursery curriculum, following Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage 2000, uses half-termly topics to cover the six Early Learning Goals in Language and Literacy, Mathematics, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Creative Development, Physical development and Personal and Social development.

In addition, the nursery is concerned in getting children ready for school and there is a close liaison between the nursery and infant classes.

CURRICULUM

Children learn best when they are active learners. This means that children need lots of interesting practical activities so they get a chance to investigate, explore and find out for themselves how things work and what things mean. From the start of their education at Canon Burrows, children are encouraged to solve problems and tackle challenging learning activities. These activities start in the Foundation stage (nursery and reception classes) where the children begin their formal education in a secure and caring environment in which each child is greatly valued and allowed to develop at his/her own speed. They follow a special Foundation stage curriculum.

The Foundation stage classes have a good variety of educational play equipment and children are encouraged to play co-operatively and with consideration for their friends. The children have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities designed to introduce the basic skills needed for number, language, science, ICT, geography and history, music, art, craft, dance, drama, design and technology.
