Fees and Loans Office
The Student Fees Office is primarily responsible for:
- the invoicing of academic tuition fees
- the release of Student Loan BACS payments
- providing information and advice on tuition fees
In line with the Registry’s overall strategy, the Student Fees Office aims to provide a responsive, effective and efficient service to all of its customers, in particular current and former students.
Student Fees Office does not handle the collection of fees or arrangements to pay fees in instalments. This is the undertaken by the Accounts Receivable office in the Finance Department.
Since 1998, Home and EU students entering Higher Education have contributed toward their tuition fees and the current maximum they can be required to pay in 2007/8 is £3070.
Your contribution will depend on your income and that of your family. Home students can apply for a student loan to help towards living costs. For financial assistance contact your Local Education Authority. More information is available from the DfES website.
From 2006/7 Variable Tuition Fees were introduced. Details of Tuition Fee Loans, Bursaries, Scholarships and Mainteance Loans and Grants which may be available to you can be accessed at the Student Support Services website. As a publicly funded provider of higher education in England who has decided to charge tuition fees above the standard level we are required to produce an access agreement. This agreement should set out how we will safeguard and promote fair access - in particular for students from low income groups - through bursary and other financial support and outreach work.

TUITION FEES 2007/8
It is evident from information being received from the Student Loans Company that in many cases the wrong variable tuition fee has been notified to Local Authorities (LA). The Full Time Variable Tuition fee for 2007/8 is £3,070. Any student who has a support notification showing a tuition fee of £3,000 or who has requested a Tuition Fee Loan for this amount should contact their LA to have the figure amended. Failure to do so may jeopardise the calculation of any bursary you may be eligible for and would also render you liable to be invoiced for the outstanding amount.
The 2007/8 Tuition Fee for existing deferred students is £1225.
Student Loans are made to students by the government through the Student Loans Company (SLC). You can apply for a Student Loan by contacting your Local Education Authority and completing Form PN1. You can download the form from the DfES website or complete it on line at the Student Finance Direct website. Once you have been assessed as to how much loan you can have, you request it from the Student Loans Company and you are sent a Payment Schedule Letter detailing the dates of payments which are made termly.
Student Loans for new students will be released automatically on successful completion of registration and should arrive in bank accounts 3 working days later. In the case of the weekend registration, loans should arrive in bank accounts on the following Thursday. Providing proof of Identification at registration is crucial in this regard as fraud prevention measures required by DfES disallow release of loans to students who cannot prove their identity.
For continuing students, Student Loans will be automatically released provided you complete the on-line registration and the first instalment should arrive in your bank on the payment date notified on your Payment Schedule Letter. This means that your loan should be waiting for you on the first day of term rather than you having to wait 3 working days. Student Loan queries can be addressed through the Student Fees Office in Becket Bf03 (email@example.com) as normal.
The automatic release of student loans means that you do not have to bring your Payment Schedule Letter to be scanned either at registration or at the beginning of the new academic year (for continuing students). However, if your loan has not arrived within three working days of registration or the new academic year, you should take your Payment Schedule Letter to the fees office so that we can investigate if there is a problem and try to rectify it for you.

1. I've got my letter from SLC telling me my loan should have been paid into my bank last week but it hasn't arrived yet.
You should bring that letter to the Registry Help Desk to enable us to scan the barcode which will release your student loan. If you are away from college (on placement) email to firstname.lastname@example.org quoting your Student Support Number and we will reply to inform you of what arrangements we have made.
2. I am considering withdrawing/interrupting, what happens about my tuition fees and student loan?
If you withdraw/interrupt after the second week of starting your course, you will be liable for a percentage of your tuition fees. This is subject to University Policy, details of which can be found on page 41 of the student procedures booklet which can be accessed by clicking below:

Any student loan that you have received will be repaid through the Inland Revenue and will be deducted from your wages when you start earning the prescribed amount (currently £15,000) .
You must ensure that you inform the Registry of your withdawal/interruption or you will remain enrolled and be liable to pay all your tuition fees.
