Welcome to Carrington Infant School

Carrington School Entrance
Take a tour

Carrington Infant School is a co-educational LEA maintained school for pupils aged 4-7 years. The school is situated in a delightful semi-rural setting in the village of Flackwell Heath, near High Wycombe. Carrington Infant School was opened in 1965 and is named after the Carrington family to whom the land once belonged. The school has a Early years department for 4 year olds and a unit for children with Social Communication Difficulties. There are two hard play areas and a playing field. A spacious library contains a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books. Children are encouraged to take books home as well as using the library for study and enjoyment.

A music room and an art room enable children to experience early concepts of the arts which benefit their education, and there is an IT suite which is time tabled for the weekly use of each class.

The school was awarded recognition as an 'Investor in People' in 2001, in 2002 was awarded the Schools Achievement Award.
The last OFSTED inspection was held in January 2007.

MISSION STATEMENT

In accordance with the Governing Body's Mission Statement, our school is committed to developing each child:

  • academically
  • socially
  • physically
  • emotionally
  • spiritually

with respect to their individual needs and entitlement in order that they grow with confidence and self –esteem throughout their childhood.

    AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

The Governors and Staff firmly believe in the right of all pupils to have equal access to an education which:-

    - offers a wide variety of experiences and opportunities whilst sustaining a high quality of provision throughout;
    - challenges and stimulates, whilst maintaining sympathy at all times for variation in individual abilities;
    - enables and empowers, whilst ensuring that the first and most important objective is to learn 'how to learn';
    - embraces all developmental needs, whilst never losing sight of the primary task of preparing our children for a productive, independent and morally responsible adulthood.

Our School curriculum is broadly based, balanced and differentiated in order to promote the mental, physical, cultural, moral and spiritual development of all pupils. It aims to prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the next stage of their education. We offer a caring yet stimulating and secure environment.

We aim, during the time a child spends with us:

    a) to develop a high standard of literacy and numeracy to the best of each child's ability.

    b) to develop the ability to study, research and question.

    c) to teach respect for other's values and beliefs.

    d) to develop independence, self-control and self-confidence.

    e) to forge links between home, school and the community.

  • ADMISSION AND ORGANISATION

In Buckinghamshire the current policy is for children to start school part-time in the term in which their fifth birthday falls.  Carrington Infant School admits children in the September of the academic year in which their fifth birthday occurs i.e., the beginning of the child's reception year. Initially children attend on a part-time basis, mornings only. By October half term of their reception year all children will be attending full-time. The LEA will try to ensure that your child will go to your first preference school. First preference forms are available from the school office along with Bucks 'Guide to Parents' which explains the procedure for applying for a school place.

If the number of first preferences exceeds the school's admission number for the year the following criteria are applied:

1/ Children who have a statement of Special Educational Needs which names the school.

2/ Children in Public Care for whom there is an agreement between a designated officer acting on behalf of the County Council as Corporate Parent and a designated officer of the LEA that the school will more appropriately meet that child's needs.

3/ Children Living with the Catchment Area of the school. Click here for details of the catchment area

4/ Siblings of children who will still be in attendance at Carrington Infant or Carrington Junior school on the date of admission. (This will be checked before an offer is made).

5/ Children with exceptional medical or social needs supported by written evidence from a doctor, social worker education welfare officer or other appropriate person.

6/ Children with exceptional educational needs, supported by written evidence from an appropriate professional.

7/ Once the above criteria have been applied, then further places will be awarded according to the to the distance between the family's normal home address and the schools nearest entrance gate; closest first. The shortest designated public route is a public route with a proper made up surface, such as tarmac or concrete. If it is a road, it does not have to have a separate pavement.

Please note that if you have a pre-school or nursery place it does not ensure a place at the school when there is over subscription. If you do not start at the schools pre-school provision you are still entitled to be consider for a place through the application of the above criteria.

The intended admission number for the academic year 2007/08 will be 60 pupils.

We are holding prospective parents meetings for children wishing to start school from September 2008 on:

                  26 September 2007 at 9.30 am and
                  31 October 2007 at 9.30 am.

    ORGANISATION

Children are grouped in mixed ability classes. Currently there are two classes in each year group. In Foundation Stage children work towards the Early Learning Goals through a variety of experiences working individually and in small groups as appropriate.  In Key Stage 1 children may be taught in ability groups in Literacy and Numeracy according to their individual needs. A variety of teaching and learning methods are used in both the core and foundation subjects. Topics are planned to show development and progression throughout Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage.

Much of the children's work is based on first-hand experiences. This enables them to relate their work to real life situations. Teachers are encouraged to arrange visiting speakers and outside visits to enable us to provide aspects of education beyond the school site.

    CURRICULUM

    FOUNDATION STAGE.

Children in the Nursery and Reception classes follow the curriculum for the Foundation Stage which prepares them for learning in Key Stage 1 and is consistent with the National Curriculum. They follow six areas of learning:-

    · Language and Literacy
    · Mathematical development
    · Knowledge and Understanding of the world
    · Creative development
    · Physical development
    · Social and Emotional development

    KEY STAGE ONE

From the beginning of Year 1 all children are taught the subjects of the National Curriculum plus Religious Education. The children progress according to their ability which may vary between subjects. Class teachers teach all the subjects to their pupils but are able to receive advice and information from other members of staff having expertise in a particular subject.

    INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

Every class has the use of a computer, tape recorder and other forms of technology. Computers are used as an integral and beneficial resource within the classroom encouraging confidence and providing experience in word processing, data handling, etc extending the cross-curricular activities of the children.

There is also an ICT suite with Internet access of which every class has regular use.

    EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We run a number of lunch time clubs.  These include a gardening club, art club and various sporting activities (eg dance, gym and cricket)

A football club operates after school each week during the Spring, Summer and Autumn months.

    ASSESSMENT

Staff continually assess children from the moment they are admitted to school and each child works at regular intervals in his/her Assessment Book. Formal assessment takes place when:

    a) a child enters the Reception class – Baseline Assessment, and,
    b) towards the end of the Year 2 academic year – Key Stage 1 SATs.

The Key Stage 1 SATs results for the school and latest national results are published later in this prospectus. The school uses the approved Bucks LEA Baseline Assessment. .
