Caterham High School

School

Caterham High is a mixed comprehensive school catering for approximately 1300 students of 11-18 years of age and is built on one site. It serves part of the Clayhall and Woodford Bridge areas of the London Borough of Redbridge. Clayhall itself is in the northern part of the Borough, not far from its boundary with the County of Essex, and is adjacent to some open country; both Hainault and Epping Forests are  nearby. Most of the school’s catchment area consists of houses built during the 1930 -1950 period. There have also been several very recent developments in the area. The school currently draws from five local primary schools and has been fully subscribed for a number of years.

The School is housed in modern buildings with general teaching rooms alongside the extensive specialist teaching areas consisting of 8 Science laboratories, 3 Computer rooms, Art rooms, Resource Centre, Music suite with rehearsal rooms, Drama Studio, Design & Technology - Food and Textiles area, Design & Technology workshops, Media Studies suite and 2 fully equipped Business Technology rooms.

In addition to the indoor provision for sport, consisting of a heated swimming pool, large sports hall and gymnasium, there is a ‘Redgra’ all-weather play area and tennis courts on site, with extensive playing fields some minutes’ walk away.

The Sixth Form Suite enjoys spacious facilities for approximately 300 students who have access to all the equipment required for successful and enjoyable learning.

SIXTH FORM

The Sixth-Form at Caterham High School has grown rapidly in recent years as members of the local community have become aware of the outstanding levels of success enjoyed by our students, and the excellent reports made by inspectors and awarding bodies. From a figure of 64 students just twelve years ago we now have approximately  270 young people following a wide and flexible range of courses.

The school is situated in a pleasant residential district and the sixth-form block is constantly supervised by teachers to ensure a safe and pleasant working environment for students.  The sixth form suite enjoys spacious facilities and students have access to all the equipment required for successful and enjoyable learning.

Small classes and good student-teacher relationships provide the basis for high levels of academic success and the acquisition of learning skills. There are also a range of field trips in many of the A Level subjects,  enabling students to broaden their understanding of the topics studied.

Our Pastoral Team provide excellent advice and first class references to help our students move on into good careers. Caterham students have enjoyed high levels of success in applying for University. Parents have frequently commented on the high level of support which students recieve.

Caterham High School is well known for its excellent Musical and Cultural events which have led to frequent appearances on television and in the press.  Students have also organised a variety of enjoyable events to raise funds for charity.  New sixth-formers quickly find themselves enjoying the wide range of opportunities which sixth-from life has to offer.

Our Information Technology facilities are outstanding, and are certainly the best in the local area. Ten rooms in the school are equipped with up to date computers and many  of these machines are in areas specially reserved for Sixth-Form.

FACILITIES

In order to give our young people the best possible opportunities Caterham High School have invested heavily in the provision of a modern, well equipped learning environment carefully designed to meet the needs of our students. The spacious study area is equipped with two computer networks, book-cases, televisions and videos as well as other multi-media facilities. There is always a teacher available to give help with work, careers advice or any problems which might arise. The calm working environment enables students to complete good work during their free periods.

The sixth form area is large and comfortably furnished, complete with its own cafeteria and toilets. This facility is suitable for many different uses, including quiet reading during lesson time, socialising during breaks and a range of clubs and activities after school. Here there is a warm and friendly atmosphere which helps new students feel at home very quickly of the rooms in Caterham High School are equipped with computers providing students with the best possible facilities.

The Sixth Form have two computer rooms for their own exclusive use and these are permanently connected to the World Wide Web. In recent years the school has won a national Award for the best internet website produced by students. Our students rapidly develop a high level of expertise and confidence in their use of ICT. They have even built their own computer network.

SPORTS COLLEGE

Caterham High School has now been awarded specialist
Sports College Status

This enables us to obtain substantial government funding to further improve many aspects of our facilities so that all of our students benefit, in ways which go far beyond simply sport.

Physical Education is offered as an A Level.

It is also possible to follow a
sports and leisure course at GNVQ intermediate level.

The school has also been chosen by
West Ham United to provide educational courses for apprentice footballers in the West Ham United Academy of Football.

In the last year for which results are available the West Ham apprentices achieved the highest grades of any trainee footballers in England. Several of our apprentices have already gone on to play first team games for West Ham
