Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School

In June 1909 the Cecil Road Schools were opened. The boys and girls were in separate accommodation. The first Headmistress of the girls' school was Miss Bundle who was appointed at the age of 27. The majority of the staff that were appointed to the school came from Kempthorne Street School. Certain teachers at that time were only earning £10 a year. In 1988 the KCC Education Committee decided to amalgamate Cecil Road Infant and Junior Schools. The new Cecil Road County Primary School began life on 1 January 1990 under a newly appointed Headteacher.

The new Cecil Road Primary School occupies the former junior and infant buildings and the nursery accommodation. The nursery was purpose-built in 1970. The infant building is now known as the Lower School and the junior building is known as the Upper School.

In the Lower School there are four classrooms, a resources room, a hall, mini ICT Suite, activity areas and a library.

In addition to the ten classrooms in the Upper School building we also have a well-stocked library, music room, DT/Kitchen area and a full ICT suite. The Upper School also houses our Pupil Development Centre which incorporates support for English as an additional language (EAL), Additional Educational Needs (AEN) and Additional Literacy Support (ALS). We have a Learning Mentor available for those children who may need emotional support. There is a Care Suite and a disabled toilet on the ground floor with a lift for access to the upper floor.

The school has an indoor swimming pool and in addition to the hard surfaced playing area we also make use of the playing fields at Beauwaters Sports Centre.

In the early years your child will concentrate on the basic skills - learning to read and write and use numbers. Under the National Curriculum your child will also begin to explore Science, ICT, History, Geography, Art, RE, Music and PE. So as well as learning basic skills your child will follow a broad, balanced curriculum that prepares the way for secondary school.


Young children enjoy telling stories and playing imaginative games. This helps them learn to speak clearly, listen carefully and to want to read and write stories for themselves.

By 7 they should be starting to read independently and beginning to write legibly, producing short pieces of writing on their own, using complete sentences and spelling simple words correctly.

By 11 they will be able to read different kinds of texts and make simple comparisons between them. They will begin to match their style of writing to different audiences. They will be getting better at organising their work, punctuation, spelling and putting their ideas across clearly.


Young children’s first steps in Mathematics are through counting, rhymes and practical activities like weighing and measuring.

By 7 most will be able to deal with numbers up to 100; work out change; recognise common 2-D and 3-D shapes; know the common units of measurement.

By 11 many pupils will have developed and understanding of the precision needed for mathematical calculations and of how important Mathematics is in their own lives. They will know their tables, and be able to make 3-D objects, find areas, perimeters and volumes, use graphs and diagrams. They will be working out calculations in their heads or on paper, and making a start with algebra.


Children’s natural curiosity about the world around them provides the starting point for their exploration of Science.

By 7 they will have started to look at the variety of living things, simple properties of materials, the effects of pushes and pulls, and the relationship of the earth to the sun and moon.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

The topic approach throughout the school broadens and deepens pupils’ understanding of Information Communication Technology and its applications. Many of the children in the juniors learn to use the word processor. Other work carried out includes experience of programming, desk top publishing, computer-aided design and computer control. Opportunities after school are provided for any child to extend and develop their skills in computers. The school has 45 computers.

Religious Education

Our children practise a variety of religions, so at Cecil Road Primary and Nursery School religion is taught with great sensitivity. Our general aim is to develop a deeper faith in the child's own religion as well as fostering an interest in other customs and beliefs.

Extra-curricular activities

Your children may have the opportunity to participate in one of our club activities. These usually take place either at lunchtime or after school and are run by teachers who are giving up their time voluntarily. At this time the clubs available are recorders, dance, football, netball, swimming, hockey, computing, science, games, thinking skills, history.

Special needs

The school values the abilities and achievements of all its pupils. We endeavour to provide the best learning conditions for each pupil, promoting development in understanding and social maturity alongside their peers wherever possible. Sex education

Sex education is taught at all levels and according to the National Curriculum attainment targets 3 (Processes of Life) and 4 (Genetics and Evolution). The older children receive more formalised education using resources available from outside agencies, e.g. the School Nurse.

Complaints about the curriculum and religious worship

The Local Education Authority has published a leaflet explaining what parents should do if they have a complaint about the curriculum or religious worship in their child’s school. This leaflet encourages parents to discuss the complaint with the Headteacher (or with another senior member of staff). It says that the great majority of complaints can be resolved in this way. However, a parent who is still dissatisfied can refer a complaint to a panel of the school’s governing body.

These are held once a term and provide opportunities for parents to discuss their child’s progress with the teachers who take them, and to set targets for further development. These days prove extremely valuable to the staff as well as to the parents.

Throughout the year meetings are held with parents to inform them about the National Curriculum. There are workshops for parents on Literacy and Numeracy.



The school’s most important material resource is its extensive stock of books.


The school has two central libraries. These libraries contain thousands of books which are available to every child in the school. The junior library is located in the Upper School and provides a selection of fiction and non-fiction books. The infant library provides of separate selection of reading books for the younger child.


The school can offer individual tuition in a full range of musical instruments by visiting teachers. The school has a choir which practises weekly and performs at events. These include the popular Christmas and summer concerts.


Each year there are numerous productions that take place. We have visits from theatrical groups and make visits to the secondary schools to see drama productions.


The school has an excellent reputation for its art. Displays of the highest quality can be seen in and around the school. Children’s work has also been on display in local libraries. The children have an opportunity to take part in art trips which involve visiting museums and galleries.


Cecil Road School has a reputation for the achievement of excellence in many sports. The most important aspect of its approach is the encouragement of all children to enjoy sport. They are introduced to the following sporting activities: athletics, cricket, football, hockey, gymnastics, netball and swimming. The school has its own swimming pool.


Most of our children start school in our nursery unit which caters for up to 45 children in each of the two sessions. This phase of the children's education is known as the Foundation Stage and the children are offered various activities to promote their development in six areas of learning.

These areas of learning include:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Communication, language and literacy
  • Mathematical development
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

Activities on offer range from painting and modelling to sand and water play. Construction tasks, drawing, role play and outdoor play are also available. The children listen to stories, assist in cooking activities and join in counting rhymes and songs. They also have the opportunity to learn water competency skills in the on-site swimming pool.

Places in the nursery are offered according to the nursery admission criteria. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from the nursery, and it is our policy that only adults known to the nursery staff are permitted to collect a child at the end of a school session.

Children can start in the nursery after their third birthday. Arrangements are always made for parents and children to visit and spend time in the nursery prior to admission. Home visits are also carried out prior to admission, and children starting at the beginning of a term will be admitted within the first three weeks. Times of sessions are - morning: 8.55– 11.25 am; afternoon: 12.55– 3.25 pm.

Pre-school class (full-time)

Children will be offered a place in the pre-school class (infants/nursery) during the half-term prior to their entry into the main school (infants) if they are offered a place in the infants.

Admission to the Infants

There will be two admissions of 4-year olds into the Infants school at the beginning of the Autumn and Spring Terms. Children who become 5 years old between 1 September and the end of February who start full-time education at the beginning of the Autumn Term. Children who become 5 years old between 1 March and 31 August will commence full-time education

Nursery Admissions

1. At times demand for nursery places greatly exceeds supply and in these circumstances great care needs to be given to the selection and admission procedures.

2. Children are eligible for consideration for admission to the nursery after their third birthday.

3. It is desirable that children should spend 3 successive terms in the nursery if possible in order to gain the most benefit before going into main school.

4. Children will normally attend part-time i.e. 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions per week. Each session should cater for the whole nursery age range.

5. Children admitted to the nursery unit will normally come from the area normally served by the school although children from outside the immediate area will be considered.

Criteria for admission

1. Places should normally be offered on a part-time basis.

2. Places may be offered for fewer than 5 sessions per week under exceptional circumstances.

3. Responsibility for determining admissions to the nursery will rest with the governors subject to the guidelines laid out by the LEA. The governors may delegate this responsibility to the Headteacher.

4. If the nursery is oversubscribed then places will be offered to children in accordance with the LEA admissions criteria.

5. If more parents apply for places at the nursery then there are places available decisions are made using the following criteria:

i. A small number of places will be offered to children with special educational needs as assessed by the Area Pre-School Panel;

ii. Nearness of the child’s home to the school with those children living nearer being given priority.

There is not statutory right of appeal for nursery places (it should be noted that admission to the nursery does not guarantee admission to the primary school).
