meet the headmaster
At Chafyn Grove we offer a warm and welcoming environment with a family atmosphere where your child's learning experience can be nurtured in small class sizes. We hope to create an ambitious academic environment, which accompanied with good Sports facilities and coaching, extensive Art, Music and Drama and a commitment to extra-curricular activities will encourage your child to discover their independent strengths within the wide range of opportunities on offer.
Our aim is to enable your child to thrive in the happy atmosphere that is created by a mixture of our caring pastoral system and our team of talented and committed teachers while maintaining good discipline with clear traditional values.
Please do explore the website and find out about the areas that interest you. It will give you a flavour of the school, but there is no substitute for the real thing, and I would be delighted to show you around and introduce you to both the staff and children.
Mr Eddy Newton, Headmaster
academic
Small classes, quality teaching and high expectations form the backbone of our academic success. We aim to challenge each child to develop and flourish within the classroom, providing an environment where they are happy, confident and well supported. While we follow the National Curriculum and indeed exceed the standards required, we are not bound by it but are able to offer a broad and balanced curriculum.
Getting the basics right and learning how to learn are core elements of our school, but we also expect every child to find an area where they can excel. Art, Design Technology, Drama, ICT, Music and Physical Education are all part of the weekly timetable alongside the more academic subjects. French begins in Year One and Latin is introduced in Year Six. When our pupils leave us (mostly at 13) they have experienced a wide range of subjects and are ready to make their more specialist choices at their Senior Schools.
Our Early Years Department gives a child the best possible start to school where children learn through play in a happy and positive environment. As they move through our excellent pre-prep each child is treated as an individual within the group and is able to progress at a pace that suits their stage of development. A smooth transition into year 3 continues the promotion of an enjoyment of learning. Mixed ability form teaching gives way to specialist teaching by the age of nine at which time the children are streamed according to their general ability.
general information
Boarding at Chafyn Grove is popular and enhances the sense of community at Chafyn Grove. Boarding is about making the most of your time at school, developing independence and making friends for life. Whatever age a child starts to board, our aim is to provide a caring and happy environment in which children thrive. The School offers accommodation for full and occasional boarders. Day children can take advantage of our flexible boarding arrangements and many of them transfer to full boarding as they progress through the school.
The boarders are accommodated in cosy, brightly decorated dormitories within the main school building with girls and boys separated in two different wings. They enjoy the benefit of a secure and homely atmosphere and are encouraged to make their dormitories feel like home from home; their rooms are often creatively decorated with their own pictures and posters, their own bedding and of course a teddy or two! The matrons take great care in ensuring that their laundry is done and they also take responsibility for their medical needs.
The communal areas consist of three separate common rooms: one large main room where the hub of activity takes place, a quiet room where the younger children can play games, do jigsaws, draw or read and a room for our top year boarders only where they can chat and listen to music on squashy sofas. We do recognize each individual's need at times to relax, to drop defences and be private.
Parents are always able to contact the House staff at any time of the day or night and the children have access to telephones located within the house. Transport to and from airports is available if the children need to fly abroad.
