Message from the Head
Mrs Lesley Young
Choosing a secondary school is a key decision for both parents and children.
These pages provide a snapshot of life at Chailey but I do encourage you to visit our school to see for yourself.
Chailey enjoys a reputation for high standards, both in terms of academic achievement and personal development. It is our fundamental belief that every student deserves the best we can provide. We aim for excellence from all our students, whatever their ability, and work to prepare them for the ever-changing global community they will join as young adults.
We want them to lead happy, fulfilled and rewarding lives.
Teaching and learning lie at the heart of what we do. Through hard work, superb teaching and strong support from home and school, our students have consistently achieved excellent examination results. Most pleasing of all, we have maintained our "value-added" - the measure of how far students' achievements exceed expectations - at the highest level.
As a Specialist Language College, we offer our students a wide range of opportunities and experiences aimed at developing both their language skills and their awareness of other cultures. We are also holders of the International Schools’ Award in recognition of the international dimension of our work in all areas of the curriculum. We have also been awarded a second specialism in Humanities – the leading subjects being English and Geography. We are the only specialist Humanities school in East Sussex.
Chailey is a school in which students with a wide range of needs and talents are able to learn together happily and successfully. We work to create a caring and purposeful community in which everyone has a sense of belonging and where courtesy, respect, responsibility, good behaviour, hard work and high attainment are highly valued. We know we can't do it on our own: we believe strongly in our partnership with parents, governors and the wider community.
We enjoy celebrating individual achievement, whether it is academic, sporting, artistic, musical or dramatic! We have just been awarded the prestigious Arts Council England Artsmark silver award in recognition of our work developing and supporting the arts which complements our Sports Council Sportsmark award.
OfSTED has judged Chailey to be a "good school with outstanding features" with "good teaching and outstanding care, guidance and support”. They also highlight our school as “very inclusive with excellent support for vulnerable students and those with learning difficulties or disabilities”.
We have a great deal to offer and much of which we are proud. We are confident, but not complacent.
We are always delighted to welcome visitors, so I hope you will accept this invitation to come and speak to students and staff. We look forward to meeting you.
