Welcome letter from Headteacher

Dear Parents/Guardians

Thank you for your interest in Charleton Primary School. We hope the contents of this website will help you make our school the choice for your child.
Our aim is to give you some information about the daily running of the school and the practices and principles we uphold.

Records show that a school with about forty pupils was flourishing in the village in 1870. The present building was opened in 1890 as a result of an act of private munificence by the Earl and Countess of Compton.

As a voluntary controlled school we are fortunate to have the Church’s support in many areas. They provide us with representatives on our Governing Body and help us to develop our Religious Education Curriculum and Acts of Worship.

We believe our school provides a caring and secure environment where children, staff, parents and governors work happily together to create the opportunity for a quality education for the children of this community.

Our aims, outlined below, centre round the needs of the whole child. They can only be experienced by seeing our philosophy at work. I would suggest that your next step, after browsing this website, is to arrange a visit with your child.

I look forward to meeting you.

Yours faithfully

Ken Crabtree

Acting Headteacher

SCHOOL ORGANISATION AND CURRICULUM

The children are organised in a flexible class groupings, with an emphasis in each class on the abilities, needs, interests and aspirations of the children, alongside the requirements of the National Curriculum. Children learn at their own pace within the class; for most this will be with others of their own age group but for some this may be with children older or younger than themselves.

The school curriculum is designed to provide a complete programme covering the full seven years the children are in school, with time for them to adjust to school life at five and prepare for the next stage of their education at eleven. The requirements of the National Literacy and Numeracy strategies are in operation throughout the school.

For all subjects the National Curriculum provides a list of skills and concepts to be acquired by the children at different levels of their development. These levels do not necessarily correspond to school years but to levels of performance, dependent on maturity, intelligence and experience. Priority is given to the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and ICT which take at least half of curriculum time. Although we are a small school we are particularly well resourced for ICT with a networked computer suite.

The six Foundation subjects of History, Geography, Art, Music, Technology and Physical Education have specific skills which are taught separately but many of the concepts and programmes of study are taught more effectively through specific topics which give depth and meaning to the children's work while stimulating their interest and imagination. We have a series of yearly programmes within which the children can acquire the required knowledge while learning at their own pace and level of maturity and through which teachers can 'revisit' skills and concepts in order to review, reinforce, revise and assess their pupils' knowledge without repeating subject content. Children have the opportunity to work on whole school projects and performances.

French is an extra-curricular subject provided by the school for year 5 and 6 children. The emphasis is on developing a knowledge of foreign language to give the children confidence in using and speaking French in preparation for their formal start in year 7 at secondary school.

The school offers a variety of clubs through the year during lunch times and after school. Clubs include ICT, sport, music, art, and "The 3.30 special" which is Christian based.

Aims

OUR SCHOOL EXPECTS THE BEST FROM EVERYONE.

IT IS A PLACE WHERE CHRISTIAN VALUES EQUIP EVERY INDIVIDUAL WITH THE MORALE STRENGTH AND SPIRITUAL DEPTH TO LIVE IN THE CHANGING WORLD.

Admissions

Devon County Council has a Two Term Admission Policy. The dates of entry are:-

Autumn Term - Children born on or between 1 September and end of February

Spring Term - Children born on or between 1 March and 31 August

We encourage children to visit the school at least once before they start school in order that they can make friends and adjust to school life with confidence and whenever possible we offer the option of regular half day visits during the term before the children start their full time education.

We run a Friday Club at our school for pre-school parents and children to get to know our school. The session runs from 2pm and ends at 3.15 with a whole school assembly.

The school admission policy is the responsibility of the School Governors and the Local Education Authority. Each Devon school serves a particular area but parents may apply for a place in any school. In general terms the area primarily served by Charleton Primary School consists of West and East Charleton, Sherford, West Frogmore and the surrounding area. We do however have children from Kingsbridge, Beesands, West Alvington, and East Prawle

Parental preference is agreed wherever possible. Where demand exceeds available places, preference will be given to those pupils whose older brother or sister will be attending the school at the beginning of the school year and to those who live nearest to the area served by the school. At present out annual limit is ten children per year and the standard number for the school is 70.

Parental preference is refused only:-

a) if compliance with the preference would prejudice the provision of efficient education or the efficient use of resources; and

b) if the arrangements for the admission to the preferred school are based wholly or partly on selection by reference to ability or aptitude and compliance with the preference would be incompatible with selection under the arrangements.

Even then, parents may make an appeal for a place at that school to the School Admissions Appeal Committee.
