Welcome to Chelmsford County High School

  • We aim in each of our students to develop the skills, knowledge and qualities she will need to play an active role in a changing world, and to achieve excellence in her chosen fields
  • We aim to provide an environment which is supportive but challenging, and which fosters integrity, confidence and self-esteem, independence of thought, creativity, flexibility, compassion, respect for others, and a love of learning for its own sake.

Since its foundation in 1906, Chelmsford County High has won national recognition for its all-round excellence.

It combines the strengths of a single-sex girls’ grammar school with the advantages of being a thoroughly modern school which prepares students for a rapidly changing world.

Some of our up-to-date resources have been acquired through winning Technology College status in recognition of high standards in science, mathematics, technology and information technology.

Achievement in other areas of the curriculum has led to the school being awarded in 2005, Music College Status, and in 2006, Language College Status.

Our aim is for each student to succeed in whatever field she chooses. Past students have become academics, vets, business women, actresses, solicitors, social workers, teachers, scientists, artists, barristers, doctors, broadcasters, bankers, software designers, an MP, a senior UN official – we are proud of the variety of their achievements.

As well as achieving outstanding public examination results, our students are involved in a wide provision of extra-curricular activity.

The school provides a stimulating, challenging and enjoyable environment where talented individuals (and by that I mean all our students) can flourish, grow in confidence, enjoy themselves, and learn responsibility and initiative.

Although we draw students from a wide area, we value the sense of community that we have built locally through the involvement of students and staff in a variety of projects which we undertake in order to give to, and learn from, the world beyond school.

Technology College Status under the specialist schools programme was acquired by CCHS in June 2000. Music College Status (with English) was granted in December 2004.

Headteacher's Letter

Mrs Nicole Chapman

The choice of a secondary school for your daughter is a crucial one and there is convincing evidence that girls achieve best in a single-sex environment. Throughout its first century, Chelmsford County High School has provided outstanding education for able girls. In the twenty-first century we will continue to combine the strengths of a single-sex girls' grammar school with an innovative and dynamic approach, responding to the demands of a rapidly changing world.

Our vision is "developing the leaders of tomorrow". This is achieved by providing numerous opportunities for our students to develop the leadership skills, knowledge and qualities they will need to play a significant role in the future. We aim to stimulate and challenge the minds of our students in order for them to attain the highest academic achievement. Each one is also encouraged to succeed in any field she chooses. Past students have entered the professional fields of medicine, law, education, banking, politics, media, art, ICT and the sciences. We are proud of the variety of their achievements.

Our interest in our students is not confined to academic achievement. We also encourage each one to develop her personal talents through a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities. Our school is a stimulating and challenging environment where all individuals flourish, grow in confidence, enjoy themselves and learn responsibility and initiative.

We are a team of highly committed teachers and support staff, working in partnership with governors and parents to provide the best possible education. Frequently, we appear at the top of national league tables at GCSE and A level and our focus on teaching and learning constantly means we review our practice.

As a specialist college in three distinct areas, Technology with Mathematics and Science, Music with English, and Languages, we are constantly seeking new ways to enhance our curriculum and the facilities we provide for our students. We work with our local community and beyond, thereby supporting others to strive for excellence.

We are a happy and caring community which believes in traditional values and in offering an environment where girls are given every opportunity to flourish academically and to develop the confidence and the skills to become well rounded young women, ready to take their place in society. We are proud of our students and if you take the opportunity to come and meet us all, we believe you will see why.

Nicole Chapman
