Chestnut School

We, at Chestnut Primary, are proud of our warm and friendly atmosphere and the team of dedicated staff who contribute to it.

Please enjoy our evolving website and do contact us with your ideas to help further improve its design and content. Help us to 'raise our phoenix from the ashes' and then we can all fly together!

We look forward to your contributions and becoming part of our happy and healthy school community.

About As

This March 2007 we were put on to the National Schools Database for the brand new acclaim of Healthy Schools Status, which makes us only the second Primary School in Torbay and the first in Brixham to have earned this prestigious award. Look out for the new logo on our letter heading soon, and for a preview go to our links page.

We continue to strive for high expectations of our pupils and recently we were awarded a DfES Award for Excellence for improved results since 1997. We couldn't have achieved this without real teamwork and the determination that every child should reach their full potential.

We enjoy working closely with parents to support the learning and welfare of our pupils and we place great importance on the excellent communication that exists between home and school.

This website will give you an idea of how the school is organised, but please do not hesitate to make an appointment to see the school for yourself or to ask any further questions that may not be covered here.

We believe that effective learning develops in a happy, secure environment and one that provides challenge and enjoyment. We are confident that we provide that.

There have been some recent changes to our Governing Body. We would like to pay a huge tribute to our retired Chair, Peter Bushell. After 13 years of dedicated service to our school Peter has now 'handed over the reins' to Nick O'Brien, a local business man and Brixham Lifeboat volunteer - we wish him well in this new position of responsibility.

Peter can now relax with his family and pursue his favourite hobbies. Everyone at Chestnut says " Thank you for all you have done Peter - enjoy your well deserved retirement!"

We also welcome aboard Valerie Simpson, our new Clerk to the Governors. She brings a wealth of experience, and we look forward to her keeping everything organised and in order.

The governors normally meet at least twice a term and are responsible for major matters such as appointment of staff, repair and maintenance of the buildings and overall management of the budget. To help cover all their responsibilities they have formed 2 sub-committees; {1} Personnel & {2} Resources (Premises & Finance issues). These meet before the main governors' meetings to discuss new issues and make recommendations to the full committee. Curriculum issues will now always form part of the full governors' agenda.

If you would like to know more about our Governors, or even how to become a Governor in the future, please contact us here at school and we'll always try our best to answer your questions. If we don't know the solution ourselves we will endeavour to ask 'someone who can'!

Our Governing Body are:

  • Mr. Nick O'Brien (Chair/Community)
  • Mr. Keith Facey (Vice-Chair/LEA)
  • Mrs. Valerie Simpson (Clerk)
  • Mrs. Margaret Bickley (LEA)
  • Mrs. Liz Murch (Parent)
  • Mrs. Julie Shears (Parent)
  • Mrs. Sonya Radmore (Parent)
  • Mrs. Lynne Ward (Parent)
  • Mr. Glenn Page (Headteacher)
