Numeracy
Mathematics at The Chetwood Primary School strives to equip our pupils with a powerful set of tools to understand the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. We try to foster mathematics as a creative and enjoyable discipline, which stimulates moments of pleasure and wonder.
Our mathematics curriculum is delivered using a National Order that describes what must be taught at each Key Stage. The Numeracy Strategy is the framework that provides guidance to supplement the order (Copies of these are available for you to view at the school.). This framework contains yearly teaching programmes, from Reception to Year 6. It includes guidance on the daily mathematics lesson and guidance on assessment of pupils’ progress, which we follow.
Use of computers has a high profile in the teaching of Mathematics. Each class is resourced with an above-average number of stand-alone computers and has access to our state-of-the-art computer suite. Our younger children have access to a wide range of practical materials and mathematical resources. The use of calculators is taught, and they are used throughout Key Stage Two.
The pupils are taught in class groups that reflect the children's age, maturity and ability level in order to address individual learning needs.
Both the Governors and staff are constantly looking at ways to raise standards. All pupils have individual mathematics targets that are reviewed termly in negotiation with pupils, parent and staff. We are proud that our published results for Mathematics at the end of Key Stage Two are well above the national figures; an indicator that we are realising our commitment to enabling every child to reach his or her potential.
Art
We believe that Art has a significant role to play in developing creativity and the ability to express oneself. We offer children opportunities to encounter a diversity of cultural styles and periods in art. Opportunities are given for children to experience a wide range of skills, and pupils are taught to use a variety of tools and techniques while working in a range of different media. We encourage exploration, experimentation and investigation in a stimulating and lively learning environment.
ICT(Information and Communication Technology)
Chetwood Primary School has ample provision for ICT. Our suite, upgraded in 2001, has 18 machines; there are 20 more computers throughout the school and some laptops. All computers are connected to one server by means of a mobile wireless network.
All pupils from foundation to year 6 make use of this equipment. Each class spends allocated time in the suite, is able to use the laptops when required and has use of the classroom machines throughout the day. All classrooms have access to the Internet for research and using e-mail. Lessons in the suite are further enhanced by the use of an interactive whiteboard. We have an ICT technician who quickly remedies technical problems throughout the school and also facilitates lessons in the suite with practical help and expertise.
Our children cover the National Curriculum for ICT and. This includes being taught to surf the net, use e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, graphics programs, control, monitoring and data handling skills. They use, digital cameras, scanners, a digital microscope and a CD writer! We are accredited as an I.C.A.A. (International Curriculum and Assessment Agency) centre to test for the Primary Information Technology Certificate of Competence for both Key Stages. All pupils have the opportunity of leaving primary school with a recognised I.T. qualification.
Music
Chetwood School has a long history of singing. All children receive weekly singing sessions in addition to classroom music lessons.
Each year our year two children take part in the Chelmsford and District Infant Music Festival. In 2002 we hosted it at Chetwood. In July a choir from year six goes to Chelmsford’s Civic Theatre to take part in the Chelmsford and District Junior Music Festival. There is a musical performance given to parents at the end of each term. In addition the key stage two choir has sung in the town square and at the school bazaar.
Chetwood is well resourced with a range of percussion instruments, guitars and electronic keyboards. Children enjoy using these during music lessons and for concerts. Some children take lessons on brass instruments from a peripatetic teacher.
On Tuesdays Les Titford comes into school and leads the band and the senior choir. The band consists of a keyboard player, a lead guitarist and a bass guitarist. The songs are always fun including well-known “pop songs” and some composed by Les himself! The choir practises with the band between 3.30pm-4.30pm then the band takes over!
At the end of the summer term there is a big concert where both choirs perform as well as the band. |
