Welcome to the Christow Community School web site. We hope that you will find our site informative and interesting. Please use the buttons on the left to navigate to the various sections.

Much of this site has been prepared by the children themselves who are very proud of their school and their achievements.

Samples of the childrens' work can be found by clicking on the 'Curriculum' button on the left and following the links to each class.

About As

Our school is set in its own grounds in the heart of Christow, a village in the Teign Valley, which lies on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Currently, we have 74 children on roll.
The original school building dates from 1880 but a school existed in Christow long before that. Records show that there was a headteacher here in 1850 who also acted as the village postmistress.

The school has just completed a major extension and refurbishment project which has provided greatly improved facilities for the children and staff. The sensitive design has tastefully combined old with new and the improved accommodation means the school now boasts a well resourced library and an ICT suite with 6 networked computers as well as an interactive white board. Opportunities for play are also important to us and, with the help of National Lottery funding, we have built an adventure playground to complement our existing play facilities.

Our school has a reputation for excellence and is promoted within the county for its good practice. Children receive class, group and individual teaching throughout the week from an experienced team of teachers and it is our aim to develop independent thinking, confident speech and provide a high quality learning environment. To ease the transition from home to school we have established close links with Christow Pre-School, which has its own classroom on the school site and makes good use of our facilities. (Click on the link at the bottom of the page to visit the preschool website).

We endeavour to make our school a safe and caring place, where success is rewarded, all individuals are valued and we aim to build a strong, friendly partnership between home, school and the community. There is no substitute for personal contact and all parents are warmly welcomed to discuss any queries or problems that they may have with staff, governors or other parents.

The Curriculum

At Christow School, when we refer to the curriculum we mean all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning and personal growth and development. This includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also the range of extra-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich the experience of the children. It also includes the "hidden curriculum", or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their true potential.

The curriculum is the means by which the school achieves its objective of educating children in the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need in order to lead fulfilling lives.

The aims of our school curriculum are:

·         to enable all children to learn and develop their skills to the best of their ability;

·         to promote a positive attitude towards learning, so that children enjoy coming to school, and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning;

·         to teach children the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology (ICT);

·         to enable children to be creative and to develop their own thinking;

·         to teach children about their developing world, including how their environment and society have changed over time;

·         to help children understand and value the diversity of Britain's cultural heritage;

·         to enable children to be positive citizens in society;

·         to fulfil all the requirements of the National Curriculum and the Locally Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education;

·         to teach children to have an awareness of their own spiritual development, and to understand right from wrong;

·         to help children understand the importance of truth and fairness, so that they grow up committed to equal opportunities for all;

·         to enable children to have respect for themselves and high self-esteem, and to be able to live and work co-operatively with others.
