Art
At Chudleigh School we have devised our own art programme to enable us to develop children's skills in drawing, painting, collage, printing and modelling work.
All children use sketchbooks bought by the Home School Association and staff have had training into how these can be used creatively.
As a school we have special art days where we involve parents, governors and artists from the community. The focus of these days varies. We have enjoyed working on topics such as flowers, fruit and vegetables and animals. Staff work together in teams and classes mix across the age ranges. The results are amazing and the expertise of staff shared.
ICT
ICT refers to a range of information and communications Technology which include:
- Computer workstations
- Projectors
- Interactive whiteboards
- Laptop computers and tablet PCs
- PDAs
- Software
- Televisions and CD players
- Email facilities and video conferencing
- DVD and video players
- Sound recording and processing equipment
- Digital still and video cameras
- Graphic calculators
- Sensors
- Control devices
- Roamers and Pixies
- Other specialist hardware
- e.g. mini mice/concept keyboards)
At Chudleigh, we believe that ICT has the potential to enrich both teaching and learning and therefore staff work hard to embed ICT across the curriculum. ICT is used regularly by both teachers and pupils to analyse, process, communicate and present information.
Children receive weekly ICT lessons, during which the ICT curriculum is taught, and also use ICT on a daily basis within their own classrooms. We have interactive whiteboards fitted throughout Key Stage 2 and these will soon be installed in Key Stage 1 as well. Each year group has its own class computers and we are hoping to raise money to buy a small trolley of laptops in the future.
Our networked ICT suite has been in use since October 2000 and has recently been upgraded to the Viglen Classlink system. The ICT suite contains twenty computers and therefore whole classes can be taken into the suite for a lesson.
We have been very lucky to receive a lot of parental support with schemes such as Tesco Computers for Schools. This has provided us with a number of new computers, software, digital cameras and camcorders and even an electronic microscope! The Home School Association has also raised money to buy new computers for the school.
The Year 5/6 website makers club is very popular and children who attend put in a lot of extra hours at lunchtimes etc. I think you’ll agree, after browsing this website, they work very hard indeed!

Assessment
Assessment, in its many forms, is an integral part of the total process of teaching and learning, ensuring development and progression in all areas.
The purpose of assessment is:
- to recognise a breadth of achievement both within and beyond the formal curriculum
- to emphasise positive achievement and progress thereby increasing pupil motivation
- to identify individual and group needs
- to involve pupils and parents in assessment and reporting procedures, leading to future planning and target setting.
All primary school children are formally assessed at the end of each key stage (at age 7 and 11). National testing covers the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, and takes two forms - externally moderated tests or tasks (SATs) and teacher assessment. There are variations between two key stages and parents of children in Year 2 and Year 6 will receive full details during the Summer Term, outlining the nature of the assessments, full individual and school results and national comparative results.
The Reception children have a Foundation Stage Profile which records their progress.
In addition, the school makes use of a variety of internal and external assessment materials appropriate to each age group, and the information gathered is used in forming future planning as well as individual and group target setting.
Design & Technology
Design and Technology is a popular subject at Chudleigh Primary School. Each year, every class has the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding in food Technology, Materials and Mechanisms. This term, the Year 6's have been making bread and enjoyed an interesting visit to Tesco's Bakery in Newton Abbot, The highlight of which was a demonstration of jam being put into the doughnuts!
Other topics studied this term have been biscuit making, homes, pop-up books and vehicles. In Year 2, even some of our parents were kept busy, as they supported their children with the homework task of making a wheeled vehicle. Next term will bring many more exciting projects, so watch this space to find out what's happening.

Design and Technology offers the opportunity for children to apply themselves intellectually and creatively in providing solutions to technological problems.
The aim of our school is to develop an interest and enthusiasm in designing and making for all children.
Design and Technology spans the curriculum, drawing on, and linking other knowledge and skill areas.
There are three main activity types, which contribute to learning development in Design and Technology.
- Focused Practical Tasks in which children learn skills and techniques to assist designing and making.
- Product Evaluation Tasks in which children explore existing products and use what they find to add to their own repertoire of skills, knowledge and understanding.
- Design and Make assignments in which children use the knowledge gained in '2' to design and make products to meet specific needs.
Our scheme of work is structured so that each of these areas receives appropriate coverage. Each year group has a specific focus every term to develop knowledge and understanding and to experience working in a range of materials. Links with other curriculum areas are developed wherever possible.
The children progress in their use of tools and are taught how to use each tool safely. Risk Assessment is carried our by each teacher prior to any activity involving potentially dangerous tools.
