Mission Statement

At Churchfields we are committed to developing and celebrating the individual strengths of each child, actively encouraging them in a secure environment to progress well and achieve a high standard of education.

Churchfields has been, an important part of the community for well over 100 years since it opened as the Arthur Road schools, secondary Boys, secondary Girls, and Infants, in 1890. Whilst the original buildings had a certain charm, the modern, purpose built school set on a large open plot gives the children an ideal setting in which to learn and develop their skills and interests. Inside there are bright, well-resourced classrooms which include a computer suite and a library, two halls for PE, assemblies and lunch, and attractive courtyards. Outside there is a large hard play area, a good sized field and a pond area which is used for science work.

Although all primary schools in the country follow the same curriculum, each one has its own individual characteristics. The provision of education to Nursery aged children and the existence of the Special Opportunity Unit which caters for children with special educational needs reflect the school's commitment to a wide range of ability and backgrounds. At Churchfields we try to ensure that the children come into a secure and friendly environment in which they can all achieve their very best. Many visitors have commented in the past that Churchfields has an open friendly atmosphere and this is essential for both pupils and staff to work to their potential. There is a real sense of team work and co-operation throughout the school.

The effective teaching of the curriculum in a co-operative learning environment is crucial to each child's individual development. Each subject area is led by a member of staff who keeps up-to-date with developments, attends training courses, and shares expertise and good practice with others. The curriculum is supplemented with visits to places of interest (theatres, farms, museums, churches etc) or by visitors coming to the school (authors, theatre groups, representatives from different faiths and cultures, members of the emergency services, Olympic athletes and so on). We try to keep classes to a maximum of 32 in Key Stage 2 and 30 in Key Stage 1, and a number are significantly smaller than this. A number of Learning Support Assistants are also employed on a full or part time basis.

In addition to the curriculum we have a comprehensive extra-curricular timetable which offers a broader range of activities for pupils to pursue during lunchtimes and after school. Also available are a number of musical activities and a club for sign language.

We are a happy and hard-working school, continuously striving to improve in all areas. This is reflected in the two consecutive school achievement awards received from the DfES in 2001 and 2002 of which we are very proud.

FOUNDATION STAGE AT CHURCHFIELDS

At Churchfields we firmly believe that:

'Early childhood is a crucial stage of life in terms of children's physical, intellectual and social development and of their well-being. Growth is both rapid and differential. A significantly high proportion of learning takes place from birth to the age of six. It is a time when children particularly need high quality care and learning experiences.'

The Foundation Stage is made up of the Nursery and Reception classes

The Foundation Stage Curriculum is organised into six areas of learning, each with a number of relevant Learning Goals. These goals establish expectations for most children to reach by the end of their Reception Year, laying secure foundations for their future learning within the National Curriculum. The six areas of learning are:

• Personal, Social, Human and Emotional Development
• Communication Language and Literacy
• Mathematical Development
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development

We recognise that parents are a child's first and most enduring educators and believe that working together has a positive impact on development and learning. Consequently, we aim towards initiating a successful partnership between home and school.

KEY STAGE 1 and 2

Throughout the school, our learners experiences are supplemented considerably through educational visits, visitors to the school and many other activities.

English and maths are taught in line with the Primary Strategy.

AWARDS FOR ALL - LOTTERY GRANT FUNDING

The school received news in January 2003 that the bid for £4,930 for sports coaching and equipment had been successful. As a consequence, the extra-curricular programme has been extended significantly and new equipment purchased. All of the extra-curricular sports clubs listed have benefited directly from the Awards For All grant and consequently, it has made a huge impact on our school. Approximately £1,000 has been spent on equipment and training for our lunchtime FitFun programme.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Up to 40 children from years 3-6 have spent their Wednesday lunchtimes training in Churchfields Recreation Ground or at Maberley Field. Thorough preparation for the two races up at Crystal Palace is crucial. A demanding course over varying terrain takes its toll but the Churchfields Cross-Country Squad proved they have the dedication to train in all conditions: not even the heavy snow in January stopped us! There were significant improvements in performances from the wet, cold December meeting to the bright and crisp morning in March : impressive efforts, huge smiles and lots of parents in support. An enormous 'thank you' to the parents who came along and trained with the squad each Wednesday lunchtime - it was much appreciated.

ATHLETICS

Due to an excellent relationship with Blackheath Harriers Bromley, free coaching was provided by the club for year 3 & 4 children in the autumn and spring terms. The pupils who participated, demonstrated a significant improvement in their running, jumping and throwing skills. The summer term sees the introduction of the Olympic Track and Field Award Scheme, with children working on a range of disciplines to achieve either a bronze, silver or gold award by the end of July.

MULTISPORT

Thanks to free coaching offered by the Crystal Palace Partnership, we were able to offer after-school Multisport to year 1 and 2 children in the spring term. These sessions have proved to be so popular with both pupils and parents, that the school is extending them into the summer term. Year 3 and 4 children are also benefiting from Multisport's diversity of skills-based activities during the summer term.

ART GROUP

This group, which meets on Thursday afternoons, is designed to greatly extend the abilities of children with an enthusiasm and ability in art .  As an indication of the success of this strategy, please see some of the results under “Gallery”then “art work” or click HERE.  

SIGN LANGUAGE

Year 4 and 5 were offered a rather unique opportunity to attend after-school sign language sessions. The speed at which they picked up the alphabet, words and phrases was truly amazing. Such was the popularity of Sign Language, that it will continue into the summer term.
