Introduction to The City Technology College

The City Technology College, Kingshurst, opened in 1988 as Britain's first CTC. The College has pioneered many innovative features that make Kingshurst a unique environment in which to learn. The College has developed a new partnership in education, bringing together the world of industry, commerce and education and has excellent results and enthusiastic staff.

Developing rapidly, the College now accommodates 1,350 students of all abilities from 11 to 19 years of age. The College is situated on the eastern outskirts of Birmingham in the suburb of Kingshurst, North Solihull. The College serves the East Birmingham and North Solihull areas.

Kingshurst is a dynamic organisation, continually changing and progressing to meet the demands of the ever changing world - this is illustrated by our motto 'Fear Not Change'. There is a keen team spirit and commitment between staff at the College and a happy and positive approach of both students and staff.

Our first students, who joined us in 1988, completed their full-time education at the college in 1995. We are all immensely proud of their progress over the years. They come from an area which is deprived in terms of high unemployment, low home ownership, depressed urban conditions, and they are now at higher education institutions or in employment with excellent prospects.

When the College opened, 83% of students in this area were leaving school at 16, as there was no interest in education or of furthering their careers. It was considered that the majority of students would become 'dole queue fodder'. We have 'turned this around' so that now more than 80% of our students have continued with education to post-16, either here at Kingshurst or at other colleges. We set out to raise the expectations and achievements of all our students.
