Claremont Primary School

Welcome to the Claremont School’s web-site. We hope you find what you are looking for. Claremont is a successful and popular school with a clear sense of purpose. My personal vision for the school is as follows:

Mission Statement

“To provide an active involvement in learning for every pupil, in acceptable accommodation. To maintain high academic standards, providing care, challenge and opportunity for all, and seeking external accreditation for these efforts. To ensure a positive work-life balance and reflective learning culture for our staff, and to communicate our enquiry to parents, inviting their feedback.”

Please take time to look at the team’s key principles and our expectations of what the Claremont child will be like when they leave us at 11. The success of any school depends upon the collaboration of all those with a stake in it. Our web-site seeks to give you a flavour of many of the facets which I believe contribute to a successful school.

Please see our prospectus for more detailed information.

—Richard Sutton-Smith (Headteacher)

PROSPECTUS

“The purpose of this prospectus is to provide information to those parents who are making that difficult decision of where to send their children to school and secondly to act as a handbook of information for parents whose children have recently joined Claremont Primary School. It sets out the School’s aims and ethos, how it operates and the results it achieves. It also provides the information it is statutorily required to provide in such a document, mainly in tables towards the end of the booklet.”

— Deborah Bruce (Chairman of Governors)

UNIFORM

There is a smart and practical uniform, which is both simple and serviceable. The basic outfit is economical to buy and we would like all children to wear school uniform the year round as a matter of pride in their school and personal appearance.

The items of school uniform and PE kit showing the school logo are available from school through the PTA. Other items are available through retail outlets in town.

Any child who is experiencing difficulty in wearing the current uniform due to a medical condition e.g. eczema should alert the Headteacher, who will be sympathetic in trying to resolve the problem.

The principal colours are royal blue and mid-grey.

Games and PE

· navy blue shorts with royal blue t-shirt with school logo

· black plimsolls

· Years 2–6 only, a royal blue tracksuit with school logo and a pair of trainers with good grip for winter field games

· A PE bag large enough to hold PE kit, plimsolls and trainers, painting overall and personal items. A strong washable bag with drawstring opening, clearly labelled with the child’s name on the outside is recommended.

· Years 4–6 only, trunks (not shorts) or a one-piece swimming costume, towel and `royal blue school swimming bag

Labelling of Clothing and Belongings

The amount of property mislaid by children is enormous and the hours spent by staff and pupils searching to retrieve items are quite considerable. With a little ingenuity, virtually all items can be marked with a name. Please do not forget shoes, games items and even underclothing. These are the very things that get mixed up and disappear during games or swimming. Bags, pencil cases and their contents should all be named. Embroidered and iron-on labels are available from the PTA.
Uniform Sales Service

The PTA organises a sales service for items of uniform and PE kit. This enables the cost of the uniform with the school logo to be kept at a very reasonable price. Bulk orders are placed at the beginning of term and the end of each half term. Order forms are available at school and only firm orders with cash/cheques can be accepted.

There are also second-hand uniform items available from the school shop, which opens on the first available Wednesday of the month at 3 pm in the first aid room. Uniform is accepted for sale on your behalf with 50% of the sale price donated to school funds.

ADMISSIONS

The Admissions Policy for this school has been agreed by the Governors in consultation with Kent County Council, (West Kent Area Education Office). These are set out in the County Council’s leaflet “A Primary School For Your Child” and are further explained here below.

In the first instance admission to the school is determined by parental preference, provided there are places available. Shortage of accommodation or other constraints may mean that parental preference cannot be met and admission would have to be refused.

If more parents express a preference for the school than the published standard number of 60 places for new admissions, these places will be allocated by the County Council (or the Headteacher acting on its behalf) in accordance with the following criteria, which are in order of priority:

· Children in the care of Kent County Council
· Attendance at a linked infant school (not applicable to Claremont)
· Denominational preference (not applicable to Claremont)
· Current family association
· Health and Special Access reasons
· Nearness of children’s homes and ease of access to schools
