Cliffe Woods Primary School

Picture of Our School

The school moved to the View Road site in April 1974 from Cooling Street with 142 pupils on roll.  With the move came the new name of 'Cliffe Woods First School'.   By September 1994 we were on the move again but only across the car park to the Middle school building, which had been extensively refurbished for us, where we began the new academic year with the name of 'Cliffe Woods Primary School', lots more space, 295 pupils on role and a new head teacher, Mrs A J Jones, who retired in July 2005 after 11 years. Mr Watson was appointed as our new head teacher from September 2005.

Cliffe Woods School joins with parents and the community to create a safe, stimulating and caring environment in which children can grow.  We aim to assist the all round development of your child: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, morally, socially and physically.

ORGANISATION

Our standard number for admissions is 45, so more than three hundred children attend Cliffe Woods School in eleven classes.

In KS1 (4-7) the five classes are split by age but all work closely together on pre-agreed schemes of work and development.  All classes have 30 pupils or less.

In KS2 (7-11) we work in two teams of three parallel classes.  Years 3/4 share a work area outside the classrooms and follow the same topics and work as each other during the year.  Years 5/6 work in the same way and both are 'set' for Maths each day.  By this we try and ensure each child is stretched and achieves their maximum potential.

Key stage Co-ordinators ensure that overall standards are high, and curriculum co-ordinators have responsibility for their subject throughout the school.  Each class uses a variety of approaches, including class teaching, group work and individual study, depending on the subject matter and required outcome.

UNIFORM

We are proud of our school uniform and all our children are expected to wear it.  We know that the wearing of uniform gives a sense of belonging and pride in our school and we ask for your full support with this.   The uniform is as follows:-

Jewellery

For safety reasons, no jewellery, other than plain ear studs, may be worn.  KS2 children may wear a watch.  All jewellery must be removed before sports activities and therefore we recommend that items are not worn on PE and games days.  Children are expected to be responsible for the safety of any jewellery worn.  The School will accept no responsibility for loss of items.

Topics for this academic year

Picture of Sports Equipment  Beyond the Curriculum

All pupils from Y1 to Y6 have the opportunity to attend clubs after school, and most children do.  These range from art and chess to football and gymnastics.  Choices vary each term, with ten or more clubs on offer.

Years 3 and 4 go swimming at Hoo Pool, enabling them to achieve the required standard and ensure their safety in this watery area.

Years 5 and 6 study French in addition to the National Curriculum, which gives them a good start at their next school.  We offer them a chance to visit France for a day in Y5 to put their knowledge to practical use.

Year 6 may also take part in a residential trip, concentrating on living together and the more practical aspects of History, Geography and Science.  They also have the opportunity to swim and experience canoeing and rock climbing in a safe environment.
