COLYTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Since its founding in 1546 Colyton Grammar School has enjoyed a long and distinguished history. The school has a tradition of high academic expectation nurtured by a culture which values achievement in all activities and supports fully the development of each student.

CURRICULUM

Colyton Grammar School offers a balanced curriculum that fully meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. Schools have been offered greater curriculum flexibility in order to better match the curriculum to the needs of students. To this end, students (commencing with September 2003 intake) complete Key Stage 3 in two years, followed by a two-year GCSE programme and a three-year programme covering A/S and A2.

Curriculum Principles

The aim of the curriculum is to provide breadth, balance, coherence, relevance, differentiation and progression. Each strand can be defined as follows:

Breadth - To provide the opportunity for students to gain knowledge, understanding of concepts, and the development of skills and attitudes, through curriculum provision that embraces experience in the areas of the aesthetic, the creative, the human and social, linguistic and literary, mathematics, moral, physical, scientific and technological and the spiritual.

Balance - Each area will be given appropriate attention, both through timetabled provision and through extra-curricular activities.

Coherence - A curriculum planned as a whole, utilising, for example, opportunities to develop skills in areas such as literacy, decision making and ICT, across the curriculum.

Relevance - A curriculum that builds on prior learning and seeks to promote the skills of independent learning for each student.

Differentiation - Matching the curriculum to each student's ability, to ensure appropriate challenge as the foundation for effective learning.

Progression - Achieved through ensuring that learning is planned in order to focus on previous experience and with a clear focus on future learning needs. Parents are informed of the progress that each student makes through the school's assessment and report procedures.

SCIENCE COLLEGE

The school was granted Specialist Science College status in July 2003. As at September 2003, there were 121 designated Science Colleges, each at the forefront of innovation in Science and Mathematics. The school is committed to a broad and balanced curriculum, and to promoting excellence through challenge in all subjects including the specialist subjects of Science and Mathematics. The school is supporting access to Science in the Axe Valley, through post-16 provision in the Physical Sciences to Axe Valley Community College students. We are also working in partnership with the primary schools of the Axe Valley to develop Maths and Science teaching projects. We are also committed to supporting the development of science in the broader community and we are working with East Devon Primary Care Trust, and the Devon and Cornwall NHS Workforce Development Confederation, on several community projects.

SIXTH FORM

Colyton Grammar School enjoys a national reputation for the academic standards achieved in the Sixth Form. Students benefit from high quality teaching and an excellent support programme aimed at helping them to achieve their potential. The purpose-built Study Centre provides an excellent environment for private study. Although qualifications are important, it is also vital that Sixth Formers are given the opportunity to develop into well-rounded individuals, thoroughly prepared for the demands of both higher education and of employment. Ofsted inspectors judged the Sixth Form to be an “impressive feature of the school” and they praised the range of extra-curricular activities available and the opportunities for Sixth Formers to contribute to the life of the school. The relationship between Sixth Formers and staff is very much one of purposeful partnership.
