Corfe Hills School

Summer

Corfe Hills is the Upper School working in partnership with the Pyramid of First and Middle Schools for the area of Broadstone, Corfe Mullen, Merley and Sturminster Marshall. Students transfer at 13 from Allenbourn, Broadstone and Lockyers Middle Schools . In addition, each year, there are also places available for students outside this group. How many is dependent on the number of pyramid applicants. Most recently this has included students from Ferndown, Wimborne, Bearwood and central Poole.

The school has accommodation for 1600 students with 450 of these in the Sixth Form. It is a co-educational comprehensive setting great store by traditional values such as hard work, discipline, good presentation and service to the community. Excellence in all its forms is encouraged and although students may vary in their achievements depending on their talents, each young person is considered to be important and worthy of equal consideration.

Corfe Hills School was purpose built in 1977 for the 13 to 18 age group. The design, construction and continuing improvement programme make it a pleasant environment for both staff and students. The assistance we gain from our Technology College Funding, from parents and from local industry has allowed continued investment in improved facilities that provide the best in current educational thinking. Most recently this has seen multi-media data projectors introduced into all suitable classrooms.

In addition to a full range of modern classrooms there are many high quality specialist areas. The technology provision includes a large textiles area, two food technology rooms, four other technology workshops, three graphics studios and an electronics room. The creative arts are served by two drama theatres and a further room, three art rooms and an extensive music suite. Physical Education has a large sports hall with a multigym, several grass pitches, an all-weather pitch and tennis courts. There are thirteen well-equipped science laboratories. The ten information communication technology rooms are equipped with networked PCs. The school has a PC network with over 450 machines all with broadband Internet access. There is also a wireless network with over 100 laptop computers that are used by teachers to assist with their teaching. There is a careers suite, a sixth form centre, a large learning resources centre with networked computers, a lecture theatre and a school hall.

There are currently 107 full and part-time teachers who are well qualified and have specialist skills in their subject teaching area. There are 22 teaching assistants and 50 other support staff with their own specialist skills. Together they form a staff team that aim to provide, collectively, high quality education that allows your son or daughter to maximise their progress.

We aim

We aim, through the determination and commitment of the staff, to make Corfe Hills School a place where every child matters and

  • Where all feel welcome, known, and appreciated for what they are, valued for the contribution they make and encouraged towards what they may become.
  • Where students and teachers work together for effective learning.
  • Where all are able to achieve, all are challenged to aim for excellence and are supported in this with the best resources.
  • Where all are enabled to gain as much knowledge, understanding and skill as they can.
  • Where curiosity, wisdom, discernment, capability, knowledge and understanding are highly valued - not just for what they may lead to in the narrower terms of qualifications and employment, but for their own sake.
  • Where all are encouraged to adopt enquiring attitudes, question assumptions and develop individuality and independence of mind.
  • Where all are considerate, co-operative, and supportive towards one another, tolerant of the beliefs and attitudes of others and able to work effectively as individuals and in teams.
  • Where staff and parents together help students to become increasingly responsible for themselves, for their own learning and for other people.
  • Where students are encouraged to extend their education by participating in extra curricular activity.

CURRICULUM

The Governors are responsible for the overall School Curriculum which must incorporate the National Curriculum as required by the Education Reform Act 1988 and subsequent amendments. A copy of the School's Curriculum Policy is available from the School Office or by contacting Mr Philip Keen, Deputy Headteacher.

In Year 9 (the students’ first year with us), 10 and 11 we offer a curriculum which reflects the current needs of our students which is broad, relevant, balanced and differentiated to varying levels of ability and interest. Through close liaison in each subject area a continuity of the curriculum is provided by building on the achievements of the other tiers within the Pyramid, which leads to progression into all avenues of further, and higher education, training and employment at 16, 17 or 18+.
