Crofton High School is a County Comprehensive Day School. It is co-educational with 1083 pupils on roll in September 2006. The age range of the pupils is 11 to 16.
Joining the SchoolParents considering sending their children to Crofton High School are welcome to visit the school at any time (Telephone 01924 303940).
During the summer term we hold two Open Days on which we invite parents of children in Junior Schools to visit school to see us at work. There are a number of guided tours around school and senior staff are on hand to answer any questions which may arise. In addition, a group of our staff visit each of our main feeder schools during the year to talk to parents and children about life at Crofton High School. Such issues as uniform, the first week in school and the curriculum on offer are discussed. Prospective pupils spend a whole day in school in the summer term to meet some of the staff, acquaint themselves with the buildings and join in the lessons and activities. The aim is to reassure the pupils and arouse interest in their new school so that they regard transfer as a natural and happy occurrence.
Aims of the School

2. To provide for all pupils a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum appropriate to their individual needs.
3. To foster a positive ethos in the whole school community through the promotion of self esteem and respect for others.
4. To provide a learning environment which attempts to realise the full potential of all pupils through maximising their current educational experience.
5. To initiate, promote and enhance a positive and lasting partnership between home and school.
6. To promote, for each pupil, a smooth transition between successive phases of school life and a continuity in quality of personal welfare and educational experience.
7. To establish the school, its community and premises as an integral part of the whole community and in so doing foster understanding and an increased capacity for interactive contribution.
8. To provide effective training for all staff at Crofton High School so that each individual has opportunities to be developed to their full potential.
Pastoral CareThe school has a teacher responsible for each year group. This Year Group Manager will take the group through from Year 7 to Year 11. The Year Group Manager team, led by the Assistant Headteacher, involves Group Tutors and the teacher in charge of Special Needs, in the care of pupils in the school.
Every effort is made to establish good relationships and ensure that every pupil receives proper care and attention. Our pupils and their families frequently consult us about personal, medical and social problems and sympathetic, discreet assistance is readily available. If it cannot be provided within the school, contact is made with outside agencies which have specialist resources at their disposal.

There are four key factors that produce good conduct at Crofton High School. The most important of these is the development of self discipline. Contributing to this is a close relationship between school and home and openness of relationships between staff and pupils. These are, in our view, all essential to good conduct in its very best sense. The school has good conduct structures designed to manage day to day life. The Group Tutor and Year Group Manager are the key contributors to the welfare of pupils. Both seek to solve any problems that arise, no matter what the cause or circumstance.

RewardsEvery effort is made to recognise and reward sound attitude, good effort and high achievement, whether it be by an individual, a group, a class or a whole year group. Good attendance, hard work, sporting activity, individual initiative and public service are all encouraged and acknowledged through Planner credits, school certification, publicity and internal reporting. The ultimate recognition for each pupil occurs in the Pupil Progress File.
Special Educational NeedsThe department encourages "The Whole School Approach" - which broadly puts the onus on all teachers to take responsibility for the special educational needs of all pupils they come into contact with.
All pupils are of equal worth, with equal rights to access and advancement within Crofton High School. We will create an environment where all pupils have the opportunity to study a broad and balanced curriculum, relevant to their needs, abilities and aspirations.
Aims of Special Educational Needs
1. To promote the inclusion of pupils with special educational needs in Crofton High School `life' by:
a) setting suitable learning challenges
b) responding to pupils diverse needs
c) overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils
2) To ensure that all students have the opportunity to study a broad and balanced curriculum which is relevant to their needs, abilities and aspirations.
3) To develop individual and group learning programmes and to structure support to departments which enhances the school's role in meeting pupils' special needs.
4. To offer support and advice in each curriculum area so that all teachers can contribute their expertise in meeting the needs of all pupils in their care.
5) To make teachers aware of the full range of special education needs and, through shared practice and effective training, to develop their skills of diagnosis and response.
6) To seek out and develop integrated learning experiences which cross-conventional subject boundaries.
7) To develop empathic teaching strategies which promote self-confidence, self esteem and independence and are sensitive and responsive to pupils special educational needs.
8) To develop accurate and effective procedures for the assessment, recording and monitoring of pupils special educational needs assuring that the needs of all are met.
HomeworkAll pupils are expected to do Homework. The Homework timetable will specify the day on which the homework is set. A copy of the Homework Policy is included in the Behaviour Policy.
Progress FileThe Pupil Progress File is now part of the process of assessing each individual throughout their time at Crofton High. There are many aspects to this method of assessing and reporting on an individual's progress, the Pupil Progress File is the end product of this process and it is issued to pupils in their final year at the school. Each pupil is involved in reviewing their progress and setting targets for further study within each department. The group tutor's role is one of monitoring progress in all areas and agreeing the best course of action for each child.
Pupil ReportsA formal annual report to parents is compiled by both subject teachers and group tutors. These reports give detailed information about progress and suggest future targets for the individual to attempt. They are followed by a Parent Consultation Evening where those issues raised can be discussed further.
Between each year's formal report an Interim Monitoring Review and Report is carried out. These are designed to give an indication of progress and effort midway through the different year groups. Parents are sent copies of these reviews and asked to comment, as necessary, so that their views can be considered in the Group Tutor/Pupil reviewing sessions that are scheduled within the PSE programme.
OFSTED ReportCrofton High School was last inspected by OFSTED in the Spring Term, 15 - 16 January, 2007.
The opening paragraph of the reports states,
"This is a good school. It prepares its pupils well for the next stage in their education and for the wider world. Standards are above average. Pupils achieve well. Over the last two years standards have improved significantly and the school now exceeds its targets. Standards in Mathematics, the school's specialist field, are high and pupils' achievement in this area is outstanding. In English and science pupils achieve well."
