PRIMARY SCHOOL

Welcome

I would like to welcome you to Crooksbarn Primary School. On entering the building you will feel the warm caring ethos of this primary school where co-operation and sharing are encouraged at all times. We expect good behaviour and, in partnership with you as supportive parents, we aim to share responsibility for your child's development. Our main emphasis is on high standards of teaching and learning which is refelected in the attractive displays of children's work around the school.

We hope that you and your child will feel part of the family atmosphere we have created here at Crooksbarn Primary.

We want you to know about your child's education and to take part in it. Primary schooling is so different from what we exsperienced as children - it's a lot more fun for a start! The key to getting the most out of their primary years is close co-operation between parents and school. We hope you will get involved in helping your child towards a better future.

Our School

Crooksbarn Primary is a county co-educational school for girls and boys aged between 3+ and 11 years.

Many of our children join us after spending some time in our nursery. At age 11 the children transfer to secondary school.

When visiting the school for any reason please go to the school office first.
For security reasons, we have locks on all external doors. We need to monitor the presence of all visitors on the premises in order to protect the children.

To enter school, please press the button and speak into the intercom at the main door.

School Opening Times

Morning Session
8:55 - 12:00

Afternoon Session
1:00 - 3:10

At the end of the school day a parent or designated adult should collect young children. If a child has to leave school during the day for any reason, e.g. a medical appointment, a parent or a designated adult should collect him/her.

At Crooksbarn we have approximately 230 children in full-time attendance, plus an excellent 26 place morning and afternoon nursery facility.

There are currently 12 class groups in the school. We now have very few mixed aged classes and where these occur they are determined according to ability so that the children's needs in those year groups can be best met.

The school is organised into four teams - Foundation Team, Lower Team, Middle Team and Upper Team. Each team has a member of staff designated as Team Leader.

Foundation Team
Foundation team is made up uf Nursery and two reception classes three teachers and one nursery nurse. Children begin their full-time education in the Reception in either September or January. There is usually one reception class in the Autumn term and an additional one after the January intake.

Lower Team
Lower Team is made up of Year 1 and Year 2 class groups. There are currently three teachers responsible for the planning and organisation of Lower Team.

Middle Team
Middle Team is made up of Year 3 and Year 4 class groups. Thgere are 3 teachers responsible for the planning and organisation of Middle Team.

Upper Team
Upper Team is made up of Year 5 and Year 6 classes with three teachers responsible for them.

Upper Team provides a structured curriculum, focusing on sustained work top prepare children for the expectations of comprehensive school and the standards required for SATs.

The children have many opportunities to meet and work with teachers and pupils from local comprehensive schools. This helps to give them an insight into the demands of secondary school life.

General Information about the Curriculum

Our aim at Crooksbarn Primary is to develop the full potential of all children in our care. We offer every child a broad and balanced curriculum ensuring continuity and progression throughout their Primary years.

We aim to develop through:
* Language, communications and listening skills – an ability to read and find pleasure in books;
* Maths – an understanding of number concepts which will help them to live and work in an adult world;
* Science, Geography, History & R.E. – an understanding of the world in which we live;
* Art – to develop a capacity to perceive and respond to a wide range of sensory experience, encouraging imagination and creativity, a sensitivity to and appreciation of the world around us.

In addition, we hope that when our children move on to secondary education they will take with them a tolerance for the opinions and circumstances of others, self-confidence, perseverance and the experience of having nurtured warm, sincere and honest relationships towards their peers as well as to adults within home, school and the community.

We wish your child ultimately to become a happy and fulfilled member of society.

Our very young children in the Foundation Stage have access to a variety of learning experiences which are the foundation of their intellectual, physical, aesthetic and creative development.

Children from Y1 upwards have a broad outline of their curriculum laid down by the National Curriculum. All work planned by the teachers from this stage onwards is geared towards fulfilling the National Curriculum Programmes of Study.
