Crown Primary School

school aims,ethos & behaviour

educational aims
The aims of the school are:

  • creating a happy and secure environment which promotes equality for each child to learn effectively
  • delivering a broad and balanced curriculum through which each child should achieve his/her full potential, in line with the 5-14 Guidelines
  • deploying a variety of learning and teaching experiences aimed at raising achievement
  • encouraging in each pupil life styles, attitudes and beliefs which promote, health, self-awareness and esteem, creativity and ambition
  • making a contribution to the life of the community through active encouragement of meaningful relationships with parents and the wider community
  • supporting and developing the continuing professional development of all staff

school ethos
The school operates a “House” system, P4 to P7, and as a positive approach emphasis is on the awarding of points for effort, integrity, good manners etc. .

In P1-3 helping, caring, sharing and kindness are encouraged and rewarded within each class.

To encourage service and responsibility throughout the school, pupils are allocated tasks such as tidying and organising class libraries, organising resources to carry out tasks and assignments. In addition P7 pupils participate in a monitor system.

Pupils are made aware of the high expectations of home and school and accept that they should strive to give of their best in all things.

The school policy is one of zero tolerance on bullying or any form of discrimination. The school endorses the authority's Multi-cultural and Anti-racist Guidelines. Any concerns about incidents of this nature should be communicated to the Headteacher immediately.

school council
Each class from P3 upwards, annually elects two representatives to meet weekly with the headteacher to discuss and decide school issues.

behaviour
School rules exist for the safety and well being of all pupils. They support the acceptable standards of behaviour and discipline necessary for harmony among a large number of individuals. Courtesy to and consideration for others, respect for property, integrity and industry are the basic elements in promoting an atmosphere conducive to sound learning and the progressive development of self-discipline.

The 'Golden Rules' adopted by the school are displayed throughout the buildings.

Where there has been a serious breach of school rules or where normal sanctions do not produce an acceptable standard of behaviour the parents will be contacted for further discussion.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum in Crown Primary School follows the national guidelines laid down within the 5-14 framework.

5-14 is a nine-year programme for learning that it is continuous from Primary 1 to Secondary 2, and builds on good practice. It seeks to improve learning and teaching of pupils between the ages of 5 and 14 by providing progression, continuity and coherence of pupil experience and achieving more effective communication of pupil progress to parents. It also promotes collaboration between primary and secondary schools.

The programme covers:

Assessment, recording and reporting are also prescribed by the 5-14 programme.

The school also offers a range of extra curricular activities

UNIFORM

The school wishes to ensure the wearing of school uniform to promote a neat and tidy appearance, to help pupils identify more closely with the school, and to avoid extremes of dress.

The school uniform is both practical and smart. It consists of a blue sweatshirt worn over a red polo shirt, grey/black trousers skirt. Also available is a fleece for outdoor wear and a P.E. bag. Pupils should wear black or brown shoes rather than trainers to school. The Summer uniform, mid April to mid October, consists of a red polo shirt for girls and boys and for girls a checked or striped dress in blue or red.

Although the school does keep a small stock, fitting/ordering facilities for polo and sweatshirts embroidered with the school logo are available in October, March and May. A current price list is available from the school office..

Pupils are actively discouraged from wearing denim, leggings or jogging pants.
