Devonport High School for Girls

Devonport High School for Girls is a four form entry selective school founded in 1911, moving to its present site in 1937. As a grammar school the emphasis is on high academic standards. Many girls achieve at the very highest levels in public examinations and in Higher Education.

Life at Devonport High School is not all academic work; there are many extracurricular activities ranging from a full school orchestra to chess, and from basketball to drama.

Girls are expected to take a full part in the life of the school. Much is gained from working together, with younger girls taking the lead from more senior pupils to the benefit of all.

Our aim is to educate girls in the fullest sense, so that on leaving school they are confident, have the ability to express themselves clearly, have a well developed critical awareness, a sense of social responsibility and a belief in their own worth.

There are at present approximately 820 girls in the school, admitted from all parts of Plymouth and outlying areas, and from East Cornwall. Approximately 210 of those on roll are in the Sixth Form.

The Library is situated on the first floor of the Learning Resources Centre.

Our aim is to provide accessible, appropriate, well maintained resources that meet the needs of students and staff in the school. We offer a range of resources including books, 12 computers, magazines, newspapers and board games.

The library has books appropriate for ages 11-18+ and we encourage parent(s) and guardian(s) to be involved in their child’s reading, ensuring that they are happy with their daughter’s choice of book(s). Should a problem arise, please let us know.

Lower school students (Years 7 – 11) are entitled to borrow three resources for a maximum of two weeks. Upper school students (Years 12 &13) are entitled to borrow six resources. There is a library search facility on the school network which enables students to search all library resources.

We attempt to maintain an ‘open access’ policy and only turn girls away when the areas are full or timetabled for classes.
