PARTNERSHIP
During the next 12 years, your child's education and welfare are going to be shared between yourself and the school.
This needs to be a strong and workable partnership, which enables your child to get the best possible benefit from his or her education. All children are entitled to a full and meaningful education.
ATTENDANCE
Make sure your child goes to school every day and arrives on time. Children who are unwell should not be sent to school. Please notify the school by telephone on the same day.
Avoid term-time holidays wherever possible. The school should be notified in advance of holiday dates if they are unavoidable during term time. Holidays will not be sanctioned during the first half of the Summer Term as we do extensive testing. Legally you are not allowed to take your child out of school for more than 2 weeks.
COMMUNICATION
Do your best to attend any meetings relating to your child's education, i.e. with their class teacher or school nurse.
Get in touch with the school early if problems arise, or if your child seems reluctant to go to school. Ask for a convenient time to talk.
Offer praise and take an interest in your child's work. Try to keep yourself up to date with the curriculum. If any information is unclear, ask for an interpretation.
In the event of severe weather etc. preventing the opening of the school there is a system in place to inform parents - please refer to your prospectus for current contacts.
ATTITUDE
Promote 'positive behaviour' at home, and make learning fun. Discuss any concerns about school with staff, not with, or in front of your child.
Regard learning as an opportunity for your child. Their needs and experience will be different from yours, and they need to be prepared for their futures.
Have realistic expectations of your child, don't compare with others.
OTHER HELPFUL TIPS
· A register is a legal document. Help the school keep it accurate. · Have the class teacher's name and the school phone number with you at all times. · Make sure school uniform is worn and that all items are labelled/named. · Can your child dress on his/her own? · Prepare school bags together the previous evening. · Your child will learn better after a good breakfast every day. · Try to eat family meals at the table. School dinners and packed lunches are eaten in this way. · Be lovingly assertive, consistent and fair in your parenting.
