Exeter Tutorial College is a spacious, medium sized college well situated in the city, specialising in university entrance.
Tuition is given in small groups of about five students on average, or individually. Tutors are all well qualified, experienced specialists, and skilled in communicating with students. There is a library, study room, student common room, computer room, twelve tutorial rooms and three excellent laboratories. High academic standards are set within a friendly and effective teaching atmosphere.
The College provides advice and support to all students applying to university through UCAS. Guidance is given, when required, in making initial choices and continues through until their university place is secured. High priority is given to assessments, exam practice and to progress reports. The College is a centre for all examination boards and registered with DfEE. |

Our professional commitment is to ensure that every student's abilities and talents have the best chance of being recognised and to ensure that each student can have a full academic development. Examinations have a high priority with precise practices; course assignments are obligatory. Reasonable behaviour is expected from students who can then enjoy our university-type atmosphere. Students receive expert counselling about careers and they are carefully advised when making university (UCAS) choices.
The British Accreditation Council Inspectors recently gave the college this Inspection Summary:
"The Inspectors recognised and commended the very considerable improvement to the resources and physical environment of the College since the last Inspection, and also noted the strengthening of the management and administration through additional appointments. Nevertheless, they considered that the strength of the College lay in the quality of what happened in the classroom, and considered that the confidence and interest generated in the students and, in many cases, the results gained in A level examinations, were remarkable. The College has a very clear mission to enable every student to achieve his or her potential, and is normally successful in fulfilling its aim."
Tutors regularly arrange theatre visits, visits to law courts, to bodies of local and central government and to places of historical and scientific interest. These experiences bring reality to students' courses and add meaning to formal studies.
The College is situated near the heart of the city in a quiet residential area adjoining the University School of Education. All teaching is given in our spacious premises which have a library, study room, twelve tutorial rooms including three well-equipped science laboratories, a student common room and a pleasant garden. The computer room is available to students at all times and computer literacy courses are available. The internet is accessible to students at no cost.
There are excellent facilities in the city for every kind of sport, including water sports. Students may use sports centres and fitness clubs, at student costs, with our N.U.S. cards. We will also register any student at Heavitree Health Centre; for emergencies, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital is nearby. The City Centre and accommodation are within walking distance. There is a shopping area just two minutes from the College with local produce, takeaways, shops and small cafes. A bus runs direct to the coach station and to the rail station. |
| All tutors have a wide and successful teaching experience. Most have held senior positions, and many are, or have been, examiners or principal examiners in their specialist subjects.
The strength of a college lies in the quality of its tutors. By their skill and dedication they determine the student's progress. Without question, all endorse the importance of providing the experience of success through real achievement which in turn generates motivation in their students. As students are continuously involved in responding, interest is sustained and responses, whether oral or written, give a meaningful 'feed-back' to both tutor and student. The art of a good teacher is to sustain interest through the skillful use of such 'positive reinforcement' and to set appropriate targets.
We find that students come to us wanting to achieve their best results and it is gratifying to see a student's steady improvement but some students need more reassurance, the most effective being the offer of a university place. Some students, of course, are 'reluctant learners' and for them a change of environment where they can grow in confidence can help to resolve their reluctance.
However, we cannot realistically teach students without a reasonable code of practice. Our two requirements are attendance at all classes and a regular production of work. We find most students accept these requirements without question but a strict policy of sanction has to be set as a safeguard.
If a student is absent from class, without permission, she or he is contacted at once and an explanation is sought. Consultation follows and a firm warning is given if necessary. If there is a recurrence, a formal warning is given at first, and then finally a written warning with a copy sent to parents. A student whose attendance continues to prove unsatisfactory is then asked to leave the college and career counselling offered. A similar procedure is followed for unsatisfactory work.
Thankfully, these procedures are rarely necessary, but it is important that the student knows they exist.
Parents have so much to contribute to the complexities of their child's education. Their close and special knowledge of a son or a daughter and their continued interest are invaluable to all progress.
We like to meet all parents or guardians at the initial interview, and thereafter many parents visit the College if they can, or telephone if they cannot. We attach the greatest value to maintaining open relationships with parents, who are always welcome.
A full Progress Record is sent monthly to parents or guardians. The Record is intended to promote further open discussion which can be arranged at any time or at the mid-term Parents' Evening. Students may attend these discussions at the discretion of their parents or guardians. If a student is in real difficulties with studies, a continuous contact is kept with parents or guardians.
In a small college students more easily feel a part of its community and more free to share problems with fellow students and, particularly, with tutors. Tutors can be almost parental towards their students and we hope it is to a tutor who understands him/her best that a student will turn to discuss a problem. Everyday problems are usually associated with work or a personal relationship and all tutors are ready to help.
The Principal and at least three other tutors are experienced counsellors who help with more long-term problems, and they will seek outside advice as necessary.
