Year 11 is a time when important decisions must be made about your future, and choosing the right educational establishment and courses for post sixteen study is of paramount importance. At The Folkestone School for Girls we can guarantee a first class, all-round educational experience, which was acknowledged firstly by Kent County Council when our Sixth Form was awarded Class A Kitemarking and then by the OfSTED inspection team when they last visited our school in February 2004.
At The Folkestone School for Girls we are able to offer you excellent teaching in a wide range of 30 AS/A2 Level courses, including two Vocational courses. We are proud not only of our high quality care and support which we give so you are able to fulfil your potential, but also the constructive Careers Education and Guidance which we offer in order to help you make informed and realistic choices at 18+.
90+% of our students go on to Higher Education each year. They acquire places at institutions throughout the UK and undertake a very wide range of courses. We are also dedicated to providing help and support for those students who wish to enter the world of employment and enhance their learning whilst in the work place when they have completed their Advanced Level courses.
Whilst the Sixth Form is about learning, it is also about enjoying yourselves and using constructively the greater freedom with which you are entrusted. Moreover, it is your chance to have a fresh start and develop new interests. There are many extra-curricular enrichment activities in which you may participate, including work experience and voluntary work in the local community.
ACCOMMODATION AND FACILITIES
The Sixth Form is based in Penfold House which dates back to 1904. On the ground floor there is a fully equipped Careers Room with a computerised guidance system. There is a hall for Sixth Form Assembly and for lectures. There are social areas with kitchen facilities on both the top floor and ground floor of the building. On the top floor there are private study facilities with individual study carrels and computers. The Library is situated in Clewer House.
CURRICULUM
In Year 12 you will study 4 subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level. AS Level is designed as the first half of a full Advanced Level. It comprises three units, which are examined in June of the Lower Sixth year. If your results are unsatisfactory, you are able to re-sit all or individual units of your choice.
In Year 13 you continue 3 of these subjects at A2 (Advanced) Level. A2 Level again comprises three units which are examined in June of the Upper Sixth Year. A few girls each year do pursue 4 subjects to Advanced Level and some study 2 subjects to A2 Level with 1 additional subject to AS Level. No student is permitted to study fewer than 2½ A Levels.
The school also offers two Vocational A Levels in Health and Social Care, and Travel and Tourism. The Vocational A Level (Single Award) is equivalent to one Advanced Level (6 units) and The Vocational Advanced Subsidiary, which comprises just three units, is equivalent to one Advanced Subsidiary Level.
We have over the past five years forged Sixth Form links with the Harvey Boys’ Grammar School in order to offer you a wider curriculum. If there is a particular subject which you would like to study, and which we do not offer, for example Economics, then it may be possible for you to go to the boys’ school for lessons. Similarly, if we are unable to accommodate your particular choice of options in the blocks which we design, it may be possible for you to take one of your subjects at the Harvey Grammar School.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Whilst academic study must be given priority in the Sixth Form, we do also recognise the importance of a balanced education in which you have the opportunity to take on certain responsibilities and put your organisational and leadership skills to the test. We, therefore, encourage you to join in extra-curricular activities and play a full and active part in the life of the School and wider community.
