Introduction

There are currently approximately 360 pupils in our popular and over subscribed school. We serve a very supportive local community. 95% of our pupils are from the minority ethnic groups. The majority of these pupils have their ethnic origins in Pakistan or India. 90% of our pupils have English as an additional language.

There are three classes in each year group, with a maximum of 30 pupils (a figure set by our Board of Governors) within each class. The children work as a class unit, with one high ability class and two parallel classes.

In their final year at Godolphin Junior School, many of our pupils take the local 11+ exam and some go on to grammar school whilst the majority go to secondary schools within the town.

We have a very effective EMAG team who offer specialist teaching and support to those pupils who require it. Furthermore, we have a qualified and very experienced SENCO who along with her committed support team, are able to effectively help children with special educational needs.

We take great pride in setting challenging targets with our pupils and then putting into place the necessary structures and teaching methods that make these targets achievable.

The school is a well kept 1930's building surrounded by playing fields, two playgrounds, a wildlife area and gardens. All members of the school community value their environment and contribute to maintain this asset.

The children benefit from having extensive facilities for PE outside plus a hall inside. Within the colourful building, we have eleven classrooms plus a further two classrooms to the rear of the school. In addition, we have the benefit of various specialist rooms:

  • Science and Technology room
  • Library with an extensive range of books etc. plus computers connected to both the school's network and the Internet. The library is organised by the school's librarian and a group of children. Parents are encouraged to come in after school to choose books etc. with their children.
  • A Music Suite used for class lessons, music clubs and specialist lessons.
  • Our Computer Suite comprises of seventeen PCs (linked to both the LAN and Internet) plus a digital projector. Our school's ICT Manager maintains the schools ICT resources and is available to help to deliver lessons and run clubs for children and parents.
  • A specialist computer unit, contains 8 more computers, which are specifically used as tools to raise standards.
  • Classrooms benefit from up to date equipment.
  • Parents' are welcomed to courses in the Community Room.

Admissions

The Governors of Godolphin Junior School have a clear Admissions Policy. In brief the school uses the following criteria for admissions:
  1. Children whose home address is in the designated area of the school.
  2. Children who have siblings attending the school.
  3. Children who have strong medical or social grounds for admission. These reasons must be fully supported in writing from a professional person, such as a doctor or social worker, and returned with the application from. (Examples of strong medical or social grounds could be serious domestic and family problems or chronic medical conditions).
  4. Children who have attended Godolphin Infant School.
  5. Children of staff at the school.
  6. All other applicants.
The following points should also be noted:
  1. In cases where insufficient places are available in the school to meet the needs of the children in a particular admissions category, admission will be decided by identifying those children whose applications fulfil more than one of the admission criteria, applied in priority order.
  2. Where application of the arrangements described in Point 1 above fails to distinguish sufficiently between the applicants, final decisions on admissions will be based on geographical proximity to the school.
  3. The governors will not allow any class to exceed 30, as this is the maximum size suitable for the classroom size of the school.
In over subscription the following criteria will apply:
  • Pupils with a statement of special needs have priority for a place at a school where that school is named in the statement.
  • Slough looked after children are given priority for places at schools, after pupils with statements, where the school is named in the statement.
Parents should contact the Headteacher before the commencement of a term, where possible, concerning the availability of places, as there is usually a waiting list.

Curriculum

The governor's aims for the curriculum are to offer each child a broad and balanced curriculum at their individual level to ensure appropriate development within the National Curriculum. Excluding time for daily collective worship, registration and breaks the children will spend 23.5 hours a week in study.

Skills and understanding of foundation subject areas are often taught through topics. The core subjects of Maths, English and Science are taught separately. The children work in ability groups in English, Science and Maths from Year 3 - Year 6. All work is differentiated so that it is at the appropriate level for the individual pupil. This ensures that even the exceptionally able child is suitably challenged. Class sizes are generally kept to a maximum of thirty. This ensures effective teaching and learning. Staff use a variety of strategies e.g. whole class teaching, group work and individual work, to support pupils' learning. Parents can study schemes of work and policy statements at the school if they wish. Staff will be happy to discuss these in relation to the National Curriculum. Information is sent to the parent of every child about the work undertaken every term.

Should parents wish to make a complaint about the curriculum, in the first instance, they should contact the headteacher.

Guidance can be obtained from the school office if parents decide to make a formal complaint to the Governing Body, LEA or both.
