Green Park School is situated in Newport Pagnell, home of Aston Martin. The school was opened in 1990 and is a happy, caring and successful co-educational school catering for approximately 300 children between the ages of 4 and 11. | |
The design of the school is exciting and innovative, with the teaching areas surrounding a central courtyard, together with an adjoining school hall, changing facilities and music room. Newport Pagnell High Street | Newport Pagnell has a busy High Street. Many of the oldest hotels and public houses here first originated as coaching inns.In July the High Street is where the colourful carnival celebrations take place. At Christmas, KS2 children perform their production in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which you can just see in the photograph. | | |

Learning |

Autumn Term 2007 - Toys and Electricity |
Welcome to the new school year at Green Park from Mrs Nightingale, Mrs Humphreys and Miss Gibbs.
We have a range of very exciting lessons and activities planned for your child this term. The planned work covers all aspects of the curriculum and your child will be working at a level that is appropriate to his/her ability and year group.
All areas of the curriculum will be linked to our topic this term of 'Toys and Electricity'. We will continue to implement the National Numeracy and Literacy strategies through our topic with daily lessons in both subjects. In literacy, we will be exploring stories with familiar settings and traditional tales. We will be incorporating drama to improve speaking and listening skills and to make these lessons even more engaging. In numeracy we will be looking at problem solving and the use of money by simulating real life contexts.

Toys |
|
Our topic this term is 'Toys' so we will be asking the children to bring in some of their favourite toys to share with their class. Any older toys or memories that parents have over the years would be gratefully received! The children will be practising their art skills through close observational drawing of the wide selection of toys.

Electricity |

In science our topic this term is 'Electricity'. The children will be exploring different sources of light and experimenting with electrical circuits. | |
Christmas Production |
|
After half term we will be learning songs in preparation for the prestigious Key Stage 1 Green Park Christmas Production! Be prepared to know all of the songs yourself by the time December arrives! | |
The Three Little Pigs |

We are looking forward to a cross curricular week of Literacy and Design and Technology, in which we will be working on practical projects, using various materials based on The Three Little Pigs story. Get your boxes ready! | |
BLP |
|
We will be continuing to use Building Learning Power (BLP) in the classroom in order to make children more independent in their own learning. We encourage them to think of how they can solve problems independently without having to rely heavily on adult support, which builds their confidence. It would be great if you could continue this at home by encouraging children to find out the answers to their questions independently, and promoting the idea of children thinking for themselves. | |
How can you help? |
We look forward to your continued support with your child's reading. We listen to all of the children regularly at school but we ask that your child reads to an adult every day out of school hours to ensure progress. We encourage children to be reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts at home and to ensure it is logged in their purple homework diaries each time. It is also important to encourage them to discuss the texts that they are reading to make sure that they understand. The main emphasis of shared reading should be enjoyment.
There will be regular 'Homework Challenges' that relate to literacy, maths or topic work and we ask that you assist us by ensuring that the challenges are completed by the children and handed in.

Autumn Term |

We hope you all had an enjoyable summer break! Welcome back to a new term and school year. This is a busy term. This term's topic is based on the work of Roald Dahl. We have organised an educational visit to 'The Roald Dahl Museum' in Aylesbury and will be having our very own 'Roald Dahl Day' in school when both the pupils and teachers will be dressing up as a character from one of his books.
We ask for your continued support with your child's learning in and out of school.
In the grid below the Year 3 & 4 Team have written examples of the things the children should be undertaking as part of their home learning for each subject, during this term. Some of these are practical to give the children experience and some are research based but all tasks can be achieved by children at their own level.
Please ensure that your child's PE kit is in school every day this term. This term the children should be wearing their summer kits for all indoor PE lessons, a black pair of shorts and red t-shirt either plain or with a school logo. They may need to wear some dark blue or black jogging suit bottoms for outdoor PE lessons when the weather becomes colder. | |
Literacy |
Continue to support your child with their reading; listening to them read and sharing stories and poems with them. Pay special attention to the language used. Ensure your child understands the meaning of the words used and discuss why the author chooses to use certain words.
Discuss the structure of stories. Identify what the problems, resolutions and messages are.
Look at the language used in adverts both on TV and magazines. Discuss how the adverts are persuasive. | |
Numeracy |
Encourage your child to use maths games on websites such as the BBC or Coxhoe School Website to learn their number bonds and times tables. Look for numbers around them, why are houses numbered even and odd? Are all speed limits multiples of ten?
Give your children the opportunity to look at, and handle real money, working out change for £1.00 reinforces number bonds to 100.
Look for shapes in buildings and talk about the property of each shape. Can they name 2d and 3d shapes?
Can your child estimate the weight of an object? Most food products have this listed. | |
Science |
Talk about the difference between man made and natural light sources. Identify examples of each.
Observe how the sun seems to change position during the day. Find out which room is the sunniest in the morning, midday etc.
Get outside on a sunny day and explore shadows. What sort of shadows do different objects form? How can you change the size of a shadow? | |
ICT |
Provide your child with the opportunity to improve their word processing skills: typing at speed, cut and pasting and setting work out in different ways by moving text.
Use data handling packages such as Excel to present data in tables and graphs.
Continue improving your child's research skills by helping them research their homework and this term's topics on the Internet. | |
History |
There will be no specific history topic this term. | |
Art |
Find out about the work of Quentin Blake. Look at examples of his work in books or on dedicated websites.
Provide opportunities for your child to practise fine motor skills at home: use coloured pencils or felt tip pens to colour in neatly; cut out carefully with scissors. | |
PSHE |
Discuss personal cleanliness with your child: the importance of washing their hands before eating, cleaning their teeth.
Ensure your child is aware of the positive effects that regular exercise will have both on their body and their mind. Encourage them to get active when the weather allows.
Talk to your child about how they are feeling. Help them use a variety of words to describe their emotions. | |
DT |
Visit the shops with your child and look at a variety of puppets. Talk about their purpose and features.
Look at the component parts that different puppets are made from and discuss what each is for.
Make simple finger, sock or shadow puppets and use them to retell favourite stories. | |
P.E. |
Please encourage your child to be as active as possible. This could be in the form of organised activities such as football, rugby, swimming or gymnastics. Or it could be walking, cycling or playing out as often as the weather allows.
Discuss with your child how exercise affects the body and the mind. | |
Music |
Children hear music all around them but do they listen to it carefully? Can they name the instruments or describe the style of music they can hear?
Talk about how the music in TV programmes or films makes them feel. Cartoon music is very different to that used for News programmes or documentaries.
Try clapping back rhythm patterns and learning children's playground games.

The Tudors This term year 5/6 are studying the Tudors. This is part of our History curriculum and enables us to deliver an exciting topic that links history with Literacy, ICT, Music, Dance, Design and Technology, Art and Religious Education.
The children will be researching key facts about the monarchs, their powers and influence, as well as other famous people of the period including; Sir Francis Drake and William Shakespeare. Comparisons between the everyday life of the rich and poor in Tudor times will be made and children will be evaluating different forms of historical evidence, from pictures and writings to artifacts. To support the children’s studies we will be visiting Sulgrave Manor for a practical Tudor day, exploring architecture, clothing and life as a Tudor child. We will also be having a Tudor day in school where the children will take part in a Tudor Masque and experience Tudor cooking and other practical activities. The Tudor topic incorporates our Religious Education studies where the children will examine the similarities between the Roman Catholic and Protestant church.
Literacy and Numeracy We will be following the National Curriculum programmes of study for both Literacy and Numeracy.
Key areas in numeracy will be addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measuring, shape and data handling. Key areas in literacy will be poetry, story writing, plays and journalistic report writing.
Science The children will be learning about humans and animals, exploring how the main organs function and how we see and hear.

ICT The children will be developing their research skills using computers and the Internet. This work will then be presented using multimedia packages so that the children can share their learning and build upon our class based historical research.
Geography Researching ‘Rivers’ will be our focus for the term. We will be following the course of a river in the local area. We hope to take the opportunity to see how the River Ouse affects local life and the surrounding environment.
Design and Technology Work in design and technology will allow the children to look at and design their own dwelling or shelter, based on Tudor research. They will then plan and build simple frameworks and structures based on their observations and research to make a Tudor money box.
PE During PE the children will have the opportunity to learn some simple Tudor dances and appreciate the style of the music and instruments of the time. The children will also be building upon their team game skills.

How can you help? |

Parental support is invaluable to us at school. Spending time helping your child to research our main topics, spending time in the library or sharing ideas all help to develop your child’s educational experience. If you are able to volunteer any time to help with listening to children read please let us know.
Each child has a homework diary, this can also be used as a home/school communication book for any queries or comments you wish us to know.
