At Grenville College Junior School, we see every pupil as a “special need” with a wide variety of talents, skills and interests. Our role as educators is to seek out the very best from every child in our care and to encourage them to develop and flourish in all areas of school life. Our community is warm and welcoming. We aim to provide a richness and diversity of opportunities over and above National Curriculum requirements, enabling our children to grow in a truly eclectic and stimulating environment.

The school is based in an elegant Georgian property set in 40 acres of formal parkland and beautiful gardens, with a lake, organic vegetable garden, playgrounds and extensive sports fields. Small class numbers and an individual approach to teaching and learning combine to ensure that our pupils thrive in an atmosphere where they feel happy, settled, secure and confident.

The Junior Curriculum

Our aim is to exceed and broaden the requirements of the National Curriculum, in a school which blends traditional standards of independent education with the best of modern educational theory and practice.

As well as Literacy, Numeracy and Science, we teach Environmental Science, utilizing the local area of outstanding natural resources.

History and Geography are taught as discrete subjects every week.

Our children also have the opportunity to use the Senior School’s Art, Design and Technology workshops, which are located on the Moreton site.

Our ICT resources are ever-expanding; the subject is taught separately and is also integrated into other curriculum areas.

Our pupils learn French from an early age, as well as some Spanish and German.

Every child participates in some physical activity every day; we make extensive use of the playing fields and sports facilities within the school grounds. Virtually every popular sport is catered for, including football, rugby, netball, cricket, rounders, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, cross country, volleyball and basketball. We compete weekly in many sports against other schools, both state and independent, throughout the year.

A specialist music teacher teaches throughout the school and children are encouraged to take up an instrument. Private lessons are available for piano, guitar, violin, flute, clarinet, saxophone and brass. Many children also take classes in speech and drama, singing or ballet.

We have a flourishing choir; our children participate in performances of all kinds – plays, musicals and concerts, musical soirees, outdoor Shakespeare productions - throughout the year.

Our Learning Support staff cater for pupils with a wide range of Special Needs, including dyslexic and gifted children.

Our pupils have Religious Studies and PSHME lessons every week, where they are taught good manners, citizenship and the importance of being a caring friend. All the children attend School Assemblies.

A House System and Merit marks provide incentives for pupils to achieve their personal best consistently. The children are encouraged to dress smartly, to look clean and tidy and to wear their school uniform and games kit with pride.

School meals are cooked on the premises using local produce wherever possible. Salads and fresh fruit are available and there is always a vegetarian option.

Words alone cannot give you the full flavour of life here at Grenville College Junior School. Do please visit us and soak up the unique atmosphere. Better still, why not arrange a free taster week for your child?

After Hours

Life at Grenville doesn’t stop at the end of each day’s formal lessons…far from it.

In addition to sports matches, which may take place after school or at weekends, around sixty different extra-curricular activities are available to pupils throughout the College, from Junior School to Sixth Form.

Many of the activities utilize the talents of our own staff; others are provided by outside organisations. Virtually every interest is catered for; in addition to mainstream sports, art, technology and music, the remarkable range on offer includes astronomy, electronics, organic gardening, contemporary dance and power yoga.

Pupils can test themselves by taking up the physical challenge of the Ten Tors Expedition and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, for which Grenville College is one of only five independent licensing operating authorities in the South West.

Our proximity to the Torridge estuary and the coast at Westward Ho! enables us to offer a variety of water sports, too, including surfing and kayaking. We are particularly proud of our thriving Rowing Club, by far the strongest school squad in South West England.

Every Grenville pupil is encouraged to participate as fully in these extra-curricular activities as in the daily timetable of academic subjects, sport, drama, art and music.
