My name is Jan Spry-Shute and I have been the Headteacher at Harlands since it opened in September 1996. The school is one-form entry and caters for the full primary age range. In January 2004 we opened our nursery which is self-financing and managed by the school governors. This enables us to offer full Foundation Stage provision as well as Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. I lead an enthusiastic and hardworking team who are committed to continuous improvement. We are currently looking at ways of responding to the Primary Strategy, Excellence and Enjoyment which at last gives us the authority to design and implement a curriculum which we feel best suits our children. The children who are currently in our Reception class will be completing their school lives round about 2018. It is impossible to imagine what the world will be like and yet we have to prepare children for the future. With modern technology opening up a huge wealth of information the task of the teacher has changed from delivering a content to a skill based curriculum. We need to teach children how to learn and how to manage and make best use of the technology available to them. Alongside this, children need to learn what it means to be a global citizen, understand and exercise personal responsibility and to be physically and emotionally literate. English, mathematics, science and information technology underpin a broader and more balanced curriculum which values the Arts, Humanities and Physical Education. All children are valued, whatever their strengths and interests. I want our children to leave Harlands as confident, self-assured young people who have strong values and principles and the skills to live happy and productive lives. I hope that you will enjoy visiting our website and join us in celebrating our children’s achievements.
